I have it in my mind that it's 3/4"Whit, but whatever it is you'll need two, one to hold the fitting that screws into the casing still, and the other to unscrew the dipstick tube from that.
Dipsticks and tubes are available secondhand.

Not until you have tried a blowtorch on it I hope. (With a hose or fire extinguisher standing by!)

You do know you can remove a large portion of the transmission tunnel for better access don't you?

If you're going to remove the engine, taking the gearbox with it, then you don't need to touch the dipstick tube. The gearbox will drop out from underneath if you remove the exhaust front pipes, or through the inside of the car with the exhaust (and engine) still in place, but the dipstick tube will need removing either way. If you remove the engine on its own, and then remove the gearbox, then you still won't have to touch the dipstick tube.

Underneath the carpet you will find that there are two cover panels bolted to the body. A small flat one which is bolted to a much larger one with about 20 (7/16" iirc) headed bolts. Remove all o the bolts and then prize away the mastic to separate the two parts. The aperture is very large and gives good access to the top of the g/box. Still not directly above the tube but that's how I managed to remove the one on my car when a rubber bung got pushed down accidentally (don't ask). Hope that helps. ETA: I migt have a pic at home - I'll have a look later on when I get home.
