As for the family, me and the Rover we had. On Good Friday we had travelled 90 km one way to a classic rally. On the picture you can only see a very small fraction of it, we had #316 : As it was so sunny and hot we decided to put the P5B in the shadow of the sugar plant. On our way there we had to use a few very rough streets. Not only that my drivers door upper trim worked loose as always. The Rover also lost a screw from its rear light: I only noticed it because I took the photograph to ask you about the boot gasket. Referring to the 2 joints visible above and to right of the curve could you suppose the rubber is still original . Is it ? It is worn but still soft. However the tension to seal against the boot lid is gone. I think it has basically been a very very good quality. Til next weekend I want to replace it with a new one. Possibly it will rain then... BTW. Are the front bushes of the rear springs common places of wear after 39 years ? Y-Bushes are new, U-clamps are fixed properly , but I still feel slightly uncomfortable about noises on the ride when pushing and leaving the throttle with open windows. Mark

The boot seal looks original, and your paint is BURNT GREY in the photo!, I had booked in for a rally on Sunday but the weather was so wet we stayed at home. Are the springs shot or dry, have you checked the dampers, I think you will get a few groans from a car of this age unless everthing is spot on. maybe you could try turning the radio up.

Dampers are new SPAX from JRW, spring leaves are heavily covered with graphite grease since last autumn. But the radio still is AM only. So thats not an option yet MP3-conversion is on its way if the basics are done on the car.

Mark have you checked the exaust system could it be knocking on something, are the baffles in the silencer ok, they can come loose inside and rattle.

DW40.... love the stuff. Originally developed for missiles by a couple of scientists. Liberally spray the springs/rubber bushes (probably very dry) and watch it penetrate in. You'll be amazed at the difference. ~ Vince

WD40 is worth a try. I store it in 5-Litre cans. And I have experienced that it definitely does no harm to rubber. Perhaps it really is the exhaust as the noise is fairly quiet. A noise from a worn diff would be louder I guess. Mark

If the front spring bushes are worn - and they will have perished somewhat if you are still on the original then so will the springs be. They are notorious for sagging even if they do not actually wear ridges into them through water getting into the dried out grease sleeves.
If they can be rest it is normal to fit new front bushes

Christmas in April! I'm looking forward to Christmas in May, just sent off an order to Scotts in Australia for most of the hard to get parts for my Mk IIc.

Miguel, that scenery looks familiar to me. Although not to that big extent. DumDum is great stuff I got 3 small cans of it meanwhile. Yours are the big ones aren't they? Did you source the door and boot seal at Scotts ? Last night I removed the old boot rubber and soaked the residue with oil to get rid of. This night I will paint some harmless patches with rust primer. I have got another rally on Saturday. Mark

It does look like Christmas, quite exciting Miguel opening up all those parcels and seeing all the new parts for your car, just glad I did not have to write the cheque for it all, as I dont suppose it was coffee and cake money.

Yes all rubbers are from Scotts. I supppose those are the large Dum Dum cans, i dont know... Iit was really exiting opening the parcels. Yesterday my oldest son made his 6th birthday. Among other things (too many) he received a Hot wheels truck wich he sleept with. I tried taking my new steering wheel and front "beatifull chromed" bumper to bed with me also, but was afraid that my wife found it a bit... child. As for the cheque... Shhiuuu...she doesnt know about that either. Anyhow I've already forgot that part. Like Monthy Phyton used to say: If you're caught in an embarassing situation... deny always, even if its evident.

From David Green. Not new, but no cracks, and needing only some good polishing. Have been looking to what I got, and someone could explain me what is the white stuff that came with the rubber bush for torsion rod?

Not at all! SAGRES! Named after the southwestern region of Portugal (and Europa of course), from where the Portuguese sail out to discover the world. Its a beautifull region where by coincidence I spent always part of my holidays. As for the beer you'll find it stronger than the spanish ones... and tastier.

We holidayed in Sagres in 1989 - went round the lighthouse and hired a Mk1 Ford Fiesta which suffered 3 punctures and a bent wheel on the terrible roads then! Hope they have improved?
Also scraped all down the RHS of it on a corner bus in Lagos.
The Portugese army/navy? held beach manouvres for 2 days landing tanks etc

The roads are a little better now, but fortunately not too much. You still enjoy a whole beach for yourself if you take down that dirt and gravel road. Perfect for a Rover... Land Rover! I imagine that the Bus driver was driving on the wrong side of the road...and by navy you mean all 3/4 ships?
