i have a mk1 chassis number 6259-00045 it is manual with overdrive and has 30k on the clock it needs a little work to be roadworthy but should be starting soon.It was built on 7th November 1958. i think this may be the earliest surviving mk1 with manual gearbox and overdrive unless anyone knows different. It also has all round drum brakes.

Terry you could have well come up wih the earliest MK1 yet. They were introduced in Sept 1958 and if yours was built in Nov1958 it was certainly an early example. Any chance of putting pics of the car on here so we can share it? It'll be interesting to see what other comments come on here about it.

I now own the white MK1 mentioned earlier in this thread (that Mark21 had). It's a May 1960 registered car but is missing a lot of MK1 features, like seats, engine etc.
I'd be interested to get some bits back to their original state, the car is a real shed at the moment although it is MOT'ed.

Hey! thats strange! My Mk1 built June 1959 is rush green over shadow green. Interior described as beige but with a light green carpet. The door cards however are identical to the photos above even down to charcoal/grey handles!

I've got a Mk1 manual saloon. Bought it on its 48th birthday, yesterday.

Tell us more - does it run etc I drove it home from Surrey to Liverpool. It drives rather well, but the carb needs an overhaul. It won't idle with the choke in, but I don't know the first thing about getting the carb on these to work properly. I've done the usual SU checks and it seems mainly to be fine, but I'm pretty sure it needs a rebuild. Overdrive doesn't work, which is annoying. That is what the left hand stalk is for isn't it? I also need a replacement 'cold start' light fitting as the one in mine has broken. It's a black manual saloon with red leather. It's got discs and a servo but no PAS. 91k miles on the clock which seems reasonably genuine. Needs a repaint but it's very original otherwise. I need to fix the radio as well, the car has been converted to neg earth and the previous keeper put the battery in pos earth - I think that's what has killed the radio. :-( Needs tyres as well. The ones on it (Dunlop Road master crossplies) appear to date from the 70s and they're not good. How it got an MOT on them I don't know, although the MOT man did advise on 'em.. Nice old thing, but probably too much work for me to do in the next few months. I'll probably end up flogging it, the P6B and possibly the P4 and buying a nice P5B Coupé instead.

Left hand switch is overdrive (assuming it is not an automatic and was not one of the non-overdrive ones in which case it operates fog light(s)) The overdrive fuse/relay and sloenoid are the usual culprits though the limit switches too can sometimes give problems
Looks good - SU HD carbs are esay to overhaul with the kit - the linkghe in the carb may have seized though

Hi ScousePete, I would be interested in hearing about your acquisition. I am particularly interested in P5's as they don't pop up as regularly as the P5B so your car would make a nice story for the Take Five magazine. Please feel free to contact me if and when you can, and maybe you can keep me updated to its progress. Regards Glenn Reeve Editor T5 Magazine.
