Oz I would have thought removing the springs stripping them down and getting rid of all that rust then giving them a good grease would be beneficial? they certainly would move better

Thanks for the links and the info...as they are (factory spec) the instrument illumination is woeful! How (& what type) did you replace the instrument bulbs with LEDs? Did it involve much work and has it brightened up the binnacle? The lights that plug into the back of the instrument cluster and speedo are old fashioned screw in bulbs. I'm not expecting miracles as there is not a lot of space for the light to get through to the front of the assembly. I've ordered these www.ebay.com.au/itm/302121403800?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT I'm primarily doing it for power consumption but I've had great success with previous cars replacing interior lights with LED's I'm also ordering a heap of these to replace what I can with T10 Blade LED's. (I have a bag of them left over from the XR8) www.ebay.com.au/itm/272312544142

I had the same in my Mini.

I recently fitted new LEDs for the instrument panel and the gear selector plate. The effect is striking: while at night I didn't see much at all (I have a little torch that I used at times!), I can now see everything perfectly! Here's the LEDs that I bought. Note that I have a 1972 P5B Coupé. For a P5 or a Saloon this might be a bit different. Cheers, Olaf

Hi Olaf, I might fit similar to mine (once I have the re-wiring finished). One question - does the panel dimmer still work? Thanks.

My LEDS I fitted years ago do not dim and not required anyway - they just extinguish. It depends on their internal circuitry

Picked up the tyres yesterday, guy bought them for his 67 Valiant but the profile was way out. Suretrac White Walls, Manufacturer date 2016, done less than 200klms. Set of 4 at half the new price.

Thanks Olaf... the sources given and the fitment to the relevent gauge/binnacle is really helpful. Now I just need to brush up on my German language skills. Good morning! Thanks Olaf... the sources given and the fitment to the relevent gauge/binnacle is really helpful. Now I just need to brush up on my German language skills. Just fire up Google Translate, paste an arbitrary website address, make sure you got the right destination language and click the translate button, then the link that appears. And it comes with a guarantee for a laugh or two as well! Cheers, Olaf

Yes good in the dark but when I tried them a few years ago they were very poor in daylight/rain and invisible in sunlight

There is nothing intrinsically brighter about LEDs. White LEDs give the impression of being brighter only because we have learned to associate yellowing of a torch bulb with the battery running flat.
I run LEDs in the side lights on my P4 and 3 litre. They are brighter than the 4w filament bulbs that are standard not because they are LEDs but because they are nominally 5w and 7w and generate light equivalent to 20W halogens. When you buy LED replacements commercially, they are designed mostly to put out the same amount of light as their filament equivalent but using less current.
Some H4 LED replacements are an exception in actually producing more light, most others are worse.

Agreed but modern cars with Leds have them right in front and not quite a distance behind a semi-obscure and dirty lens

Most of my LED's will be internal, I've tried replacing tail / brake lights and blinkers in the past and they are no good.
They are great in low light as a running light and don't get 'lost' in heavy traffic at night.

Looked at another P5 3 Litre today, possibly a donor car though at what he's asking the sums don't add up for what I need.
Ok, update on mine....
- Finished the steering wheel repairs and gave it a rough paint job so it still looks old. - Pulled the steering column apart to fix the indicators as they only come on when you hold them. Cleaned away 50 years of grease and crap and scraped all the contacts, seems to be working ok now. - Steering Wheel is back on the car
My Binnacle warning lights are crumbling as I touch them so I'm going to replace them with modern LED's, They are dirt cheap and should look similar to the originals when finished.
When I was doing the blinkers I blew a fuse, or so I thought....I could't find a fuse box apart from 2 glass ones on the firewall.
One of them has come apart, I pushed the metal end back on and everything come back to life....go figure.
The wiring is a bit of a mess in this so I'll look at fitting a fuse box. It has an alternator fitted so it looks like nothing is wired to the Voltage Regulator.
I can fit a radio or wire some lights but I'm no auto sparky, might be a job for a pro.
Tomorrow, weather permitting.
Replace shocker rubbers, left side tie rod end and upper ball joint boots.

I've just noticed the centre console...what type of gearbox has been fitted and the seats appear to be from something else?

I've just noticed the centre console...what type of gearbox has been fitted and the seats appear to be from something else? The centre console was a home made job, basically the guy wanted somewhere to put a radio and he attached the 'second gear hold' lever to the pretend gear stick. The seats appear to be original, just coloured really badly. I've seen similar in other Mk1 pictures. I'd love to pick up a bench seat for it.

A day of mixed fortunes...
- Tie Rod and upper Ball joint boots (Done) - Replace Rear Brake shoes (Land Rover) and Handbrake adjust (Fail)
Right rear wheel cylinder was seized as well as the handbrake mechanism being stuck solid. Unfortunately when the cylinder freed up it leaked like a sieve. I'll order a seal kit.
- Steering box replacement (MK2C) - May take it to a steering joint and get them to do a seal kit and fit the new one. - Shocker Rubbers (will replace if they fail RWC)

It's amazing how bad 57 year old oil can smell. Fitting the new one should have been a simple task but I decided to change over the seal on the shaft.........unfortunately the new steering box was pretty much bone dry inside and all the bearings fell inside when I loosened it off . On a positive, it is pretty much brand new, it may actually be NOS. Anyway all rebuilt and filled with Penrite Classic steering box grease. I'll fit it next weekend. Just picked up a pair of rear Mk1 Door cards, just need to organise payment and delivery.

err, if this is a manual box, should it not be filled with gear oil - SAE 90

It was like Christmas today, mailman and Couriers delivered a mixed bag of goodies.
Grill badge from NZ (Thanks Paul) Bushes, Bonnet Latch and rear brake cylinder kit from Wahdams. Windscreen washer kit to replace the pump I broke fixing the old hoses. (probably not original anyway) Chrome Acorn Nuts for the Rostyle wheels LED Bulbs
Busy weekend ahead
Washer kit is fitted already, it wash just the bottle and pump.
I'll clean and paint the wheels whilst their off to do the rear brakes and refit the refurbished Steering Box. I'll refit them with the new chrome nuts.
Once it has brakes and steering again I'll take it down and get the new tyres fitted.
