Hello I’m hoping someone can help, 1959 river 3litre auto won’t turn over either with starter motor or starting handle, engines been running fine but I’ve had to repair the fuel pump, it’s been stood for two weeks, when I’ve refitted the fuel pump I’ve encountered the problem, is there a lock on the gearbox preventing the engine from turning over? I’ve removed starter and checked out ok works fine
If I try and turn the flywheel it’s locked solid
Had spark plugs out, cylinder bores ok
Water level ok
Has anyone any ideas?

There is no lock on the gearbox that will prevent the engine turning - the Park lock just prevents the output shaft of the gearbox turning. Can the box be turned in N with one wheel off the ground?

If it was running fine 2 weeks ago the engine certainly could not have frozen solid since then in normal circumstances. I once found the exact same symptom on my P5 Coupe w 4 sp. manual. I couldn't figure it out until I discovered I had parked nose down on a hill and the carb bowl shut-off needle was leaking and allowed 2 cylinders to fill completely with petrol. I removed the spark plugs and expelled a a pint or two of petrol. All was well since. Perhaps something similar with yours?

Hi Ken, I’ve removed all the spark plugs, and nothing at all in the bores it all looks fine, it’s locked solid as if something in the box is at fault, it won’t turn backwards either, in the past the cars been stood for months on end and always started

Perhaps the starter pinion is seized/jambed with the ring gear? What is the maintenance/service history of the car?
If it was a manual gearbox a selector shaft could have come loose and allowed 2 gears to engage. As its an automatic there's really nothing tp bind it up without hydraulic pressure.

I'd definitely look at the starter. If you take the starter off and see if the engine turns by hand that should tell you the answer
