Sorry folks short on time, had a quick search but cant find the info?
I have just unbolted the middle and rear exhaust to replace with new Wadhams one, but how do I pull the middle section through the centre body beam? The whole doesn't seem big enough to get the triangular flange through is there a special way to this?
From what I can see its the original beam never welded and the exhaust looks like the proper one ( probably Wadhams from years ago just the usual silencer box gave up last night!)
They got the thing in so how does it come out?
Thanks in advance would really appreciate advice on this one?

There are two colletts under the flange that stop it going over the end of the pipe. You need to remove these first then the flange will go over the pipe and you can pull the pipe through the hole.

Oh? Thanks Dave I was just about to go at it with the grinder? Let me take a look. Sorry I cant see it?

Thank you for the tip Dave. I have figured it out and now Ralph has a shiny new bottom. I ended up cutting one side of the flange, bent it over a little and it came off the pipe. Its super thick metal so I replaced it on the new one and tightened it up. I was going to weld it back ( which I think is what they did before judging by the blob of weld but trust me its not going anywhere. The worst bit is not having a hydraulic lift or a ditch to work under this car, just ramps and slight lift with a jack. ( I am not as skinny as I used to be). Fortunately it all fitted perfectly but the stainless pee pipe at the end looks a bit pathetic so I put on a nice stainleaa finisher I purchased last year. Good luck with yours Dave, the car now sounds so quiet I am pleased will recheck bolt tighteness again in a week when its all settled. Cherry Bomb Exhaust anyone? Shame the pipes are in Excellent condition just the silencer. Typical Rover sat in a garaged polished to death and never usee. Not with me its not. The offending flange Old and new - surprisingly the new one is glavanised which is a bonus. All done Now I need to see to the diff oil leak from the bearing at the front ( will search for that one) but had enough under car work this week.

The tail section I bought has extra bits welded on the end of the pipes that are polished so look like finishers but are built in. Like you I do not have a ramp or pit so have to crawl around on my front drive.

I have got used to my trumpet style tip, so on it went again. I really want a hydraulic lift but I dont have a spare Β£6000 or anywhere to fit it. π

I have seen mobile lifts for about Β£1500 from a company in Staffordshire. Only two prongs so you need to buy 4 high stands from Machinemart. As to the price of stainless exhausts, I saw a post that said they may be cheaper elsewhere after I had bought mine. Not helpful!

Well done but no collets! Tut tut, very non-rover. Did you consider a SS system made up by the likes of P D Gough? Mine went on in 1990 and is as good as new.Guaranteed for life and probably not much more than the usual whopping cost from our friendπ Hi Dicky I read all the posts about SS and how its supposed to sound tinny etc and some dont fit well so that and the fact it was substantially more expensive than mild steel and also a few weeks league time at Wadhams I went for steel. Plus I cant go on the motorway to get it made up, the state the old one was in, but my temporary Quicksteel patch held for 3 weeks, impressed with that stuff. Anyway its done now. I am not sure I will keep the car for 20 years so couldn't justify the cost. ππ

Sadly this is my very last ever classic car Dave, between job and family life I rarely get time to work on it, hence usually late in the evening of before my shift begins. Maybe I will retire to Aus one day and I can borrow Vinces MG π

Stan said. Hi Stan, unless you plan to work until you drop, you'll find that working on, restoring and discussing/talking about your classic vehicles, will fill the void that full time work consumed...so better to never say never about your last classic...a bit like taking your last breath!

Haha I know what you mean but I do have my VW beetle and camper which are patiently waiting for me to fix up to get roadworthy so maybe I should have qualified the P5 was the last classic I bought no more after that one. The Beetle has been waiting since November 1990 to get back on the road! Its going with me that one cant part with it too many happy memories. π But you are right never say never I am finally being sensible and not looking for the next one to buy, although there was this nice cheap Bentley on car and classic...... ππ€£
