I tried to create a new thread but could not manage it.
I will request information on the following:
I am using WD40 to clean the PISTONS in situ. The WD appears to run down the sides of the pistons and to disappear. Will it do harm and if it mixes with the oil in the sump should I change the oil
I shall be attempting to remove the exhaust valves (in sets) to clean them but will not start until the cylinder head is put back together.
I thank you in advance for your valued guidance.

No intial harm as WD40 is White Spirit but when its running and OK I would change the oil as it will dilute it somewhat

Yes you should probably change the oil, but because clean oil is always a good idea. But you would have to empty a dozen cans of WD40 to make any significant dilution of 8 litres of oil.
Shellite (naptha / white gas - [US[) is more effective at removing gum from pistons skirts /rings. I pour approximately 50cc down each bore and rotate the engine by hand periodically before changing the oil.
