Hi there,
the Rover had been stood for around a month until I wanted to give it a good clean last Sunday. Although I usually need some 25-30s until it starts after having been neglected for a while, it just started on the button. When I drove it out of the garage though, it died soon after and would never start again. I must have been a bit negligent when I parked it as there was but a bit of fuel left and I thought the pump might have pulled air. I thus filled it to about half full, but to no avail. Yesterday I had a friend come over and we inspected the regular suspects (petrol, sparks, distributor, etc.). In the end, we bridged the coil with one he brought et voilĂ - it started right away.
To both our astonishment, the original coil worked a treat after the car had started once. I'm pretty biased now, with my confidence in the coil just about to vanish. However, I've got the thief-proof version of the coil (seems to still be the original!) which means we'd probably have to change everything from the ignition lock to the coil (obviously 1 part!). And I'd also like to keep it original wherever possible.
Has anyone made a similar experience? Would you exchange the coil and mount a more modern version? Open to suggestions!
Cheers, Olaf

Agree with enigmas plus I managed to retain the thief proof tube by careful prising to remove the cap. I had to dremel out a square of it since the upgrade coil I fitted with the powerspark electronic ignition had taller terminals but it all looks relatively standard and I did not need to touch the ignition switch.
My car did not seem to have a ballasted coil and as there were only 2 terminals and voltage stays at 12 volts it all works well.
Best of luck!

No ballast on TP coil - a 12v Lucas HA or Sports coil is all that is required - remove locating ring on top of original

Thanks for the answers, gentlemen! Any comment on why it seems to be working just fine again? I took the car for a spin yesterday, everything was back to normal, no problems whatsoever!
Cheers, Olaf

The planets are obviously aligned to your current benefit and good fortune Olaf but beware Murphy's Law! (Anything that can go wrong will go wrong) PS. Murphy and I have had at times too close a relationship. The origins of Murphy's Law. www.murphys-laws.com/murphy/murphy-true.htmlA couple of excerpts from the above. How Mr. Murphy died: One dark evening (in the U.S.), Mr. Murphy's car ran out of gas. As he hitchhiked to a gas station, while facing traffic and wearing white, he was struck from behind by a British tourist who was driving on the wrong side of the road. The doctor, well-known Col. John P. Stapp, had a paradox: Stapp's Ironical Paradox, which says, "The universal aptitude for ineptitude makes any human accomplishment an incredible miracle."
