Started my P5B saloon up today for the first time in about 4-5 weeks. She started fine and warmed up well. Did a full check and all was well and then gave her a quick detail polish. Had my Aston Martin down off the lift ramp too and fired her up for the first time in about 2 months and she as always burst into life. LOL.
I then fired up my petrol leaf blower and spent all afternoon sucking up leaves. The joys eh.

Put my differential back in this morning, it is suprisingly heavy considering its size, but I managed to lift it back into position while laying on the floor. Did wonder about lifting it on a trolly jack, but was worried that it might fall off. Then this afternoon went to Sainsburys to collect a new starter motor which had been left there under an arrangement with DPD. I was on my bike with just a top box and the starter motor was in a huge cardboard box. I had to unpack it and put all the packaging in their bin !

Funny old world nowadays; years ago, who'd have thought of going to Sainsbury's to get a starter motor

Another busy day in the garage and have got the brakes back together another couple of pictures. I can never remember where the springs go but think that I got it right ! Looking at the pictures I need to go and seat the rubber on the bottom of the cylinder. It was a new one and quite a tight fit as I replaced the brake rubbers again, the old ones were only 4 years old but already starting to stick. If they were made from silicone they would last much longer

Thanks, Sam, but when I tried that with the lesser spring it fell off ! Perhaps there are springs of different lengths or mine have stretched a bit !

Very neat George. You and John are obviously vying for the most pristine Rover. Where do you buy the dust free brakes...I wouldn't mind a set?

Today I have been working on the power steering pipes, everything came off easilly, but when I tried to screw in the connection of the new hose on the bottom of the pump the thread is not clean enough to go in without some force, which is probably not a good idea. Wadhams charged about £95 for that particular hose, so it is disappointing that it is not correct. On Monday I have to go to Brighton, so will go to the Nut and Bolt shop with the old hose and get a couple of nuts to run along it. If that does not work I shall have to send it back - irritating !

Removed both my front seats today and they have just been collected by my local trimmer guy i was put in touch with by Colin Gould. I am having the foams replaced/rebuilt in both seats as they are just shot and crumbling out.
The guy who is doing them also owns a Rover P6 and he completely retrimmed the whole interior and it really is a master stroke IMHOP. His Healy 3000 is the same. Both cars now mint inside. He has done quite a few Rover P5/P5B cars too so i am looking forward to getting 2 x plumped up front seats back and hopefully not too long to wait.

Well I fitted my new heater hoses this afternoon in readiness for getting the engine running again, not done much else, been far too busy doing. “warranty” jobs on a 75 tourer I sold a couple of weeks ago Hi there from NZ. I did replaced my heater hoses on my P5B just prior to christmas, but removed the radiator and front heater core for repairs as both were leaking. Presently they are being repaired at a local radiator repairer in Hamilton. The car has recently been made road worthy with a current warrant of fitness and registration since it lapsed in 2007, so happy with that. I am now trying to put together the heater unit which is proving difficult. I would really like a couple of pictures of the heater linkages on both sides with both levers beside in the dashboard in the up position. As it turns out, the heater has not worked for a very long time and has been dismantled before. The water flow valve was completely missing and other levers do not look right. I bought a valve from JRW(Very helpful even from NZ!) but would like to put it together once. Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Kiwi Peter

Today I took my imaginary Burnt Grey over Silver Birch P5B Coupe for a waft around the seedier parts of London, stroked it's imaginary and rather wonderful Mulberry leather interior with delicious abandon, admired its reflection in the imaginary plate glass windows up west, and pulled over to the imaginary kerb somewhere in Soho to admire a passing Christine Keeler look alike.... then woke up in a sweat, wondering why I sold my previous two Coupes... Being without a P5 again is painful!

Thanks John W. I have the parts and service manuals, they show some of the assembly, but as always not how they are put together. Your engine bay picture is good, but I can't quite get the detail when I blow up the heater part with the valve. Very impressive engine by though! Many thanks for your help, hopefully I can find another car locally and get the detail. Kind regards, Peter

It's week 5 of my Friday night underneath the car project. Currently wirebrushing, degreasing and painting the subframe. This time I'm using "chassis in one" from buzzweld. It's supposed to convert any surface rust and form a barrier over the steel for 10 years. Have to say it paints on far more nicely than the epoxy I used on all the suspension parts.
I'd love to stick a wire wheel on the drill and strip all the old undersell as well but I struggle to get the car high enough and there is only enough space to do one side at a time in the garage.
Ps it was chilly on the floor tonight - about 4 degrees but I'm not complaining considering our antipoedian chums plight right now.

Had both my front seats and all 4 door trim padded trims returned today from the trimmer guy i was highly recommended. 1 week turnaround is awesome too i thought and the seats with there new foams inside look and feel amazing as do the door trim pads.
I am very happy indeed with both the result and also the price. I have indeed paid for a skill which is time consuming as i am sure Velvet will second that being a pro in this field. Dave also bought me a black sack full of the old crumbling foam which was horrid. Ive re-fitted the seats and trims and they look great. I am very happy.
Anyway guys, the chaps name is Dave Barker and he is based in Faringdon between Swindon and Oxford just off the A420. His mobile number is - 07795 023860 and he is also on whatsapp too so happy to receive pictures via this for reference. He owns a few classic cars too and a Rover P6 which he re-trimmed himself and it looks gorgeous. He has also he tells me done quite a few Rovers in his time.
A really nice chap is Dave who certainly knows his onions and he operates from home too as he is a retired scientific chemist and does this only as a hobby. He was highly recommended to me by Rover P5/P5B/P6 legend Colin Gould who is also based just around the corner from Dave in Faringdon albeit i gather Colin is just about to fully retire and sell his business on to a new buyer/owner.
Regards,

Made up a bracket so that the foam sleve that covers the join in my new PAS hose is in the correct place, amazing to think that the foam is 49 years old ! The oil filter is from the 'Parker Collection'
