I've decided this year to treat my Rover (3 litre Mk1a) to a new carpet set, the car still has it's original and it's now in a very sorry state indeed. I've spent a bit of time online and it looks as if it's going to cost around 350 pounds. There seems to be a few companies doing them, some made to measure, I was wondering if anyone can recommend one, or ones to perhaps steer clear of. Hope someone can help with some advice thanks.

Yes, using J R Wadhams is a possibility. Are the carpets from J R Wadhams better than the ones for Coverdale, or are they from the same source? I was hoping for a bit of discussion on experiences members might have had with this sort of thing. Who they used, if they fit well is the colour close? It's quite a substantial price to pay and I want to be happy with the purchase so I like to do a bit of homework before parting with my cash.

If there is a choice, I recommend getting Wilton wool, not synthetic. It might also be worth having them Scotch-Guarded before installation.

I'm in same boat still saving for my carpets!
If you do a search you'll find tons on here discussing carpets for the p5. Generally I think it's felt that aftermarket carpets fit poorly compared to the originals but JRW gets better reviews than the others although there is a logo stitched in somewhere as I recall. I will probably be going with JRW and my saloon originally had silver grey carpets although they are beige now and motheaten after all the years!
Our more talented members have made their own which has to be the best way to get a pukka fit but you'll need a decent walking foot industrial sewing machine, strong hands and a fair amount of time I imagine!
Coverdale did the wheeler dealers car ( God knows why they did it in red though!) and the now owner Phil? has posted on here before but I don't know how they turned out. I suspect Coverdale are the next ones to choose after JRW but they offer a wide range of carpet qualities and constructions and I did not get the sense that the colours were particularly close to factory.
Could be wrong but that's how I've understood it and as I say JRW will be relieving me of half a grand when I order carpets and overmats en masse!

. There are mainly 3 outlets to purchase a readymade carpet set for a p5. depending on what colour you are after pretty much dictates where you buy a set from. If your after a 'mortlake brown' set (Fawn) then only JRW do that colour, its close but not spot-on. The other two outlets (coverdales & Danbury carpets) don't do that colour at all !. I've used all 3 of them on many occasions and i could say a lot about whats what but ultimately it would only be my opinion and i've read the old threads and others on here have their opinion and its mostly about the quality. In reality its not about the quality, its about the fit! Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

With experience of all 3 velvet I've a hunch you would be able to provide far more useful advice but I appreciate what you say about fit.
So the question to ask then is what carpets are shown in your pictures? They look to fit nicely and appear high quality?

I'll defer to Velvet if he disagrees, but I'd think the fit is more down to the fitter than the carpet itself?! These aren't really 'drop-in' items like a set of mats - the carpet needs 'persuading' in places, especially on the transmission tunnel. In places where the fit was the main thing I can only say I was happy with the JRW items in Mortlake Brown (on mine the logo is hidden above the pedals). Where the fitter was more important, I was less happy, and when I saw the results the air turned blue. Unfortunately the fitter was me

It's a shame to cover that up, John.

It's a shame to cover that up, John. There is a lot of hard work that is covered up Richard, my carpet came from Woolies as did all the stuff I used The binding was a pain to get the correct colour lots of washing and dying but I wanted to match the original carpets which I used as patterns, it was a thick old sandwich the carpet plus the 1/2" backing plus the edging, the picture is of the first fitting, I also made over mats to match I learnt a lot doing the complete interior and I can understand why done correctly it takes time and money!

John has done a proper job (as usual ) and is the best way to go to get the best result possible as you can make adjustments prior to final fitting. Of course you will need a proper sewing machine for the job and he has a Singer 132K6 with a servo motor (highly controlable) which is the Rolls Royce of sewing machines for carpets and hoods. so unless you have one of them don't even think about having a go yourself with a domestic sewing machine.
Barry i havent got time now but tonite or tommorow i'll put some pics up and explain what i think is the best way to go with a set of readymade carpets.

Original tunnel carpet on the left I think you can see the difference!

. i use an original P5 tunnel felt section John which is expanding foam filled (for stability) and i use it as a template and shaping block, so i place the new felt and carpet on it and shape and form and adhere the new carpet to the new felt then remove the new felt and carpet section as one piece and fit it in the car and apart from making life easier you more importantly get a 'crease free' job. Long ago while rebuilding my P5 Rover (purchased for $100 and dragged out of a farmers field after chasing the racoons out of it) I made my own carpets from nothing more than paper template patterns I hand drew. I actually was able to purchase Wilton wool carpeting correct padding from somewhere in Canada I believe and came up with as pictured. I did the 2 layer underlaying with cutouts for the floor pressings as original and did edge the carpet with an industrial machine. Not a proper job like Velvet would do, but acceptable for a rank beginner I think. Attachments:

Coverdale do a nice range in all excellent all wool. I fitted their 'Wheat' recently in my P6. Not quite right but near enough, if fact I think looks rather better.

Thanks very much for the interesting input, I really admire the guys that have made their carpets up themselves. But it's looking as if I'll be using JRW. I believe the colour in my early 3 Litre is 'antique red' it looks the same as used in a lot of P4 Rovers I see at the shows.

Hi,
Thanks for posting the image of the old and new carpet for the transmission tunnel. I am in the process of fitting the Wadhams carpet for the T tunnel, but cannot see how its possible to mold around tunnel and create the tray, due to the supplied piece being rubber backed and much thicker that the original carpet, so I am reaching out to you to see if you have any pointers / additional photo's, especially in creating the original carpeted tray. Wadhams has not been very helpful.
Thanks Ross
