Hi
Has anyone done a sump Gasket on a MK1 manual?. Was looking at it while up on hoist and it appears a cross member may obstruct the removal? Any thoughts on this please?

The cross member is fine, but you do need to drop the link arm. The bottom of the oil pump has an umbrella shaped gauze filter attached. This has to pass through an opening in the horizontal baffle plate in the sump. The sump will hang up on it, but can be manouvred free.
Don't forge the 3 nuts between the sump and gearbox, and the two bolts at the front.

Many thanks for that info. Can you buy the gasket in OZ?

If you look hard enough, you will find a few NOS items around. Some I would not touch with a bargepole. If you are in a hurry, it is not hard to cut new ones from stock paper.
However, I would just mail order from Wadhams.

Thank you. Have ordered from Wadhams along with rear main crankshaft Seal and other bits. Phil will know more but don't a lot of parts cross over to Land Rover?

David I don't believe 48,000 miles would be original or accurate for your car based on the physical evidence. If you recall, you stated that a PO did quite a lot of work on the engine. Why do this on low mileage car? Also the interior as it is, in a parlous state is an accurate indicator of a hard if not well travelled life. I'd hazard a guess that the speedo would have been around at least once (at a minimum). It's better to ere on the side of caution now in relation to refurbishing the mechanicals, rather than allow something to pass that will cause a major angst if not expense at a later date.

Hi Vince Yes my opinion also the the mileage is not accurate. Once clutch is sorted we can determine where to go from there.
