There are other areas of concern on that one, apart from the 3 litre over riders on the bumpers, it is not very impressive under the bonnet with the wrong carbs. I presume that they are P6b. One of our local members bought a P5b with the wrong carbs and had all sorts of problems which hopefully are now sorted.

Nothing wrong with the HIF6 carbs, the final version of the SU they were produced for many years, becoming the HIF44. I have them on my P6B and about to fit them to the P5B.

The other thing I was wondering about is the throttle and carb linkage where at the back of the right hand carb it links up with the control cable for the gearbox. without that cable the box will not work properly.

The HIF6 throttle and kickdown cable connections are different. On P5B conversions the original trottle cable arrangement is usually retained but
the P6B linkage, being a rod extending rearwards, has the operating arm for the kickdown cable attachment. A shorter cable has to be used, as per P6B. That rod can be seen at the bottom of this photo, the kickdown attachment being just out of sight at bottom right.

The kickdown rod and bracket at the rear of the LH head was fitted to the P5B with the shorter cable as standard, so will work with both HS6 & HIF6 carbs.

Harvey, it may be that the short kickdon cable does both. In the 3.5 Suppliment, page 18 has a diagram showing the HS6 kickdown cable linkage, which is as fitted to my 1973 P5B, adjactent to the carb. This is totally different to the P6B and I have had to source the necessary P6 bracket that attaches to the rear of the L/H head and the extended rod to it, which on the P6B also has the throttle linkage attachment at the very rear end. The HS6 cable cable connection arrangement is unsuitable for the HIF6 methinks, or at least it is easier and neater to use the P6 arrangement when converting.

I could only think that your car was registered in 1973, but manufactured much earlier. The 7FU boxes got the revised selector pattern (PRND21) and during the run got the self adjusting front servo, and the short cable with the bracket at the rear. I've fitted the P6B type brackets to many HS6 P5Bs without problems. I also fitted P6B HIF6 carbs and manifold to P5Bs using the P5B bracket at the rear of the head. The throttle cable fitted without problems.

Well I got the certificate from Gaydon, built 11th July 1973, released for delivery 13th July and the chassis number fits in with that, about 90 from the last, delivery to customer on 27th July. I have the later selector and a self adjusting servo.

You too. Same thing happened to a lot of us. They paid in the end through. A loss of business, a change of senior management, and a big apology and rethink. Too late though. We only got the Austin down here.
