How many parts do you actually need to keep that are really useful as in you will use them on a regular or semi regular basis? I have a stock of parts for my Rover that on reflection I will never need or use so I will start to sell them I think to to create a bit of space.

The present situation is that we have a stock of parts nationwide in owners hands, inventury unknown but available for owners to call upon as needed. If someone sells all their spare parts then they are added to another owners stock and therefore the nationwide stock is just shuffled around. There may be an arguement for anyone needing the storage space to shift them on, but then someone has to add it their stock of spares, the only alternative is that they are scrapped. If we all dispose of our spares by scrappage it will lead to a dearth of spares available to keep our cars on the road. My conclusion is that the present system is probably best. Only alternative I can see, and rather impractical, would be a central spares holding facility.

I have various spares that I have collected over the years and I shall keep them for as long as I have my car, the problem is with perishable spares. I have several boxes of brake rubbers, but when I re-do my brakes I buy new rubbers from Wadhams, so I really ought to throw my old ones away. The rubber bush for the gearbox control rod went and I got my spare one out - it fell apart !

There are certain parts that I want to keep but things like a spare engine and gearbox and a complete rear axle need to go to someone who's needs are greater than mine

I too have a decent box of NEW parts slowly getting bigger albeit most will be fitted to my car over the winter months. I always throw away or sell on my old usable items if they are good enough.

The Riley RM Club which I belong to does have a Spares Secretary and they offer a comprehensive list of parts, both old and new/remanufactured. This must be quite an undertaking though, including a storage facility. It actually is set up as a separate LLC I believe. It would seem that David Green and Wadhams take the place of that in the P5/B club. I have a spare 3-litre engine and transmission sitting in my garage currently. Up until recently I had a spare front subassembly and rear axle stored elsewhere, but regretably they went for scrap when I lost my storage for them. I'm sorry to see them go, but I couldn't justify keeping them longer with no extra storage.
