For a number of life event reasons, my Rover P5 Mark11c has been off the road, but dry garaged for about 4 years. I have been slowly trying to get it operational again over the last few weeks.
First thing was it was not starting, but this was quickly resolved with a new battery. Next, up is the brakes are sticking on. After reversing the Rover out of the garage with some difficulty, I jacked it up to determine which brake or brakes were sticking. It seems to be just the right passenger side. After some difficulty, I was able to remove the drum and the is some small amount of fluid leak inside which has contaminated the shoes. The pistons in the wheel cylinder while still on the car, seem solid and will not move. These cylinders where new about 15 years ago, with only a couple of thousand miles added since so I am not sure whether to repair or replace them. Any thoughts? In releasing the shoes from the cylinder, one of the return springs for the shoes flew off and I am not sure which hole in the shoe the springs should be fitted to. The manual doesn't seem to make this clear.
The handbrake seems pretty seized and so this is another job that will have to be tackled.
While I was jacking up the car using the front crossmember I noticed that one side of the car was going up much faster than the other. Now that the car is back on the ground, there is a bigger gap between the top of the tire and the wheel arch on the passenger side compared to the driver's side. There is a negative gap of about 1 inch at the rear of the car. Is it possible that I have damaged something in jacking it up?
