I was only trying to correct the impression given previously who seemed to suggest the DVLA or the Labour Party were being plain awkward, when in fact it was legislation. Its great if you can discover historu of your Rover but enjoy it anyway.

Can people not just be happy that I’m showing an interest in my car’s history? I’m aware of data protection & nobody has divulged any information about the car that they do not have permission to do, I have approached people who appear in the small history I have for the car & they have all been perfectly happy to talk about it to me including the dealer who sold it in the 90’s and all I have from him is a copy of his stock list at the time and a photograph of the car, there has been no personal information given out about either the people he bought it from or sold it to Don't worry too much about it buddy. Now Labour have been banished for good after last nights historical hammering from camp Boris i am sure in time all this D.P and GDPR crap will be flung out with Brexit and normal life and service in the uk will be resumed. Im certain of it. LOL

Congratulations on your quest to find the history of your car. I would love to find out the background to mine and found an old box in the boot with an address hand scribbled on it. I wrote to the address stating that I purchased the car an that it had been unused in over 20 years not expecting any reply but to my surprise the chap rang me. It turns out that he only sold it as he was made redundant and posted me a home made movie converted to DVD of the complete restoration of my car! Sadly all the previous history is not with the car and I have no idea how to trace it now. Does anyone have any ideas? I have include some not so recent picture of my car. Craig

A good starting point is to find out where the car was registered & see if you can find the supplying dealer, for example our old Bedford was originally registered MUR910 which was issued by Hertfordshire licensing office, I got in touch with their archives department & they had a register of marks issued which showed our vehicle, it listed the supplying dealer as Westons of Hitchin & the customer The British Tabulating Machine Co of Letchworth. I contacted Westons who still exist but sadly their archives didn’t go back far enough. The BTMC I think eventually got swallowed up by IBM and I never pursued it further. But that’s something to get the ball rolling & as you pick up snippets of info you can start to assemble a history just like I have with my Rover. I enjoy the challenge, just like trying to locate rare & difficult to find parts........I found bits for the Bedford & people at work were amazed at how I came up trumps time after time. A lot of it is getting to know a type of vehicle well and being able to recognise parts when you see them, even if nobody else knows quite what they are

The biggest Main Dealer for Rover was Henly Motors. After they were taken over a fire ensued and most of the records of stock/sales were lost including those of mine. Gaydon were only able to state the build date and the Main Dealer who had placed the order. Furthermore my car spent it's life in the Mediterranean area. I have a photo showing a Malta number (where it was admitted in the 1980s as a historical) and i bought it in Sardinia with obliviously Italian plates. So apart from that - zilch! I wish I could learn more.

Its even worse when you track down the original owner who was at the time a Doctor of?? when you find him he is a Professor of?? at a university in Cambridge, when I asked him if he remembered my Coupe he said "I had so many cars back then how the !!!!!! do you expect me to remember one" he then put the phone down He must have been an old chap so I put it down to that

Some people just don’t want to know, similar but reversed circumstances, my mate bought a mk1 Escort with his paper round money and realised it was too big a project so he sold it to a local garage who gave it a bit of a refurb & sold it on. An elderly couple ended up with the car and when we stopped to admire it one night he told the woman he had owned it and she went mental “You had the car and let it get into such a state & now you think you can just have it back for peanuts blah blah blah” All he said was “your car looks good, I used to own it”

Well it’s started again, I’ve spent the last hour looking for old photos on the net just to see if I can find the car that started the whole P5 thing for me, it was a white V8 coupe that used to stand outside a butchers shop in Morpeth back in the 70s.............no luck just yet but I will keep searching, I may be gone some time
