On my modern car it is only the o/s that works.
Parking at night 222: You MUST NOT park on a road at night facing against the direction of the traffic flow unless in a recognised parking space. Laws CUR reg 101 & RVLR reg 24 223: All vehicles MUST display parking lights when parked on a road or a lay-by on a road with a speed limit greater than 30 mph. Law RVLR reg 24
This covers the use of parking lights not side lights so I believed right.

Vauxhall cars up into the 90's had a parking light which was operated by the indicator stalk when the engine was switched off. My 94 Carlton estate had this facility. I will have to check on a more modern one when I get a chance. Phil mentioning about the little parking light that used to be clipped in the window. I always found that very useful as in them days no cars had alternators only dynamos so every little helped to conserve the battery. If you parked facing the oncoming traffic there was no problem as you just unscrewed the lenses and reversed them.

I checked, and the latest Vauxhalls still have a single parking light which is operated by the indicator stalk. I know Audi's and the like were probably the first to do this but unfortunately the parking light operated on the nearside, which was useless in the UK, but OK on the Continent.

Still does not confirm whether its legal to use half lights in the UK then?
PS This thread has turned into another topic! Did Humber Super Snipes/Pullmans/Imperials have parking lights?

Not that I'm aware of Phil. Someday I'll check it out and let you know.
