What are the possibilities for repairing or replacing the Mk II gearlever? The soft (nylon? plastic?) ball on the bottom end of the lever for my saloon is long gone. Are new levers available? Is anyone rebuilding old ones? A fellow P5 owner here in the States has had a steel ball welded to the end a gear lever, but it seems that it might be better to press on a nylon ball such that less vibration would be transmitted through the lever.
It seems that the flexible plastic seat that the gear lever pivots in is the same as that for the P6 gear lever, so that part is less of a problem.

Bodge it. I used a brown plastic type material gear wheel turned down to fit. Touch wood ... it seems to have lasted the last couple of decades or so Rgds

Hi Steve; I have the same problem with my 1966 Mk II P5 manual gearbox. In addition, the 2 rubber bushings that the selector shaft runs through toward the front of the gearbox have rotted away. I fudged some other rubber susupension bushings to make everything work, but am not satisfied with the long term survival of it. Are these parts available someplace in England? I bought a piece of nylon, bored it to the smaller step size and then cut a groove to take the larger diameter. I turned the outside to 26mm and parted it off. Quite a bit of force was needed to stretch it over the steel part of the gear stick but after a few minutes it had shrunk back to a tight fit on the stick. I put the assembly back in the lathe and machined the outside of the nylon more or less spherical and 1" if I recall correctly. I need to do the other end of the mechanism but getting rid of the slop at the gear stick end has made a huge difference. If I ignore the wait time for the nylon to recover, the whole job took about 30 minutes and the bit of nylon was less than $2. So if you have access to a lathe or a friend who does this is an easy fix. Cheers Martin

Hi 3litrekiwi. About 14 years elapsed between the initial thread and your reply. But in the meantime, JRW has made all those parts available, and I have now replaced the 2 bushings in the gear lever remote unit, the nylon bush at the bottom of the gearshift lever, and the nylon but at the gearbox selector lever. Things work quite smoothly, but I now find an occasional problem moving the gearshift lever far enough to fully engage either 4th or Reverse gear (which are at the extremes of the diagonal gearshift lever movement. It requires a compromise in the adjustment of how the gearbox selector lever is set on the remote control shaft, and the movement seems to be limited by the upper housing that centers and holds the gear shift lever at the top. It works as long as my shift is rather deliberate, but if not it can occasionally pop out of gear. Does anyone have advice on how to avoid this happening? See pictures for the JRW refurbished parts.
