As you may be aware I recently popped over to John Wallett who was good enough to help/show me how to undertake this job. I hope this is of help to those of you, like me had never undertaken the job before. See it larger here. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5YMmfRs9b4

Excellent - I have made a sticky! Good point point about Oxy but not absolutley essential but can make it a lot lot easier! Note also use of Copper grease and Denso!

Well done Glenn and John. A very valuable addition to the forum. I'm glad you chose the background music carefully Glenn. Something like Bolero would have been counter-productive. Glenn, how about prefacing the Subject with HOW TO - and then we can eventually have Phil's suggestion that these sorts of things can move into their own section. Anyone wanting to download Glenn and John's clip can find several methods in the HOW TO here roverp5.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=probs&action=display&thread=3176How soon can we expect clips on replacing sills, retrimming the interior, windscreen removal and refitting, engine rebuilding, transmission overhaul, brake replacement, cooling system maintenance, and windscreen washer bottle topping up?

Have not watched the video yet, so do not know if this is covered, but when fitting new springs it does pay to take them apart, grease each leaf liberally with graphite grease and reassemble. It is a very mucky job but you will notice the difference as you waft along !

It is a very mucky job but you will notice the difference as you waft along ! Until someone does a HOW TO photo or video essay on the subject, from scratch, Glenn's "Nylon Shim" thread may suffice. It contains a lot of good photos from Glenn, Miguel and Mcgill. Maybe Glenn should change the subject to Rear spring refurbishment, or something like that. It would also help if anyone finding helpful older technical threads while searching, could post links to those threads in the main thread on that topic. Phil and others often do this anyway. As the number of threads grows, it will get harder to find older stuff. It would be good to accumulate links to them in HOW TO threads for eventual inclusion in a HOW TO section. Just a thought.

Good idea - but all should reactivate such threads as they find them and we can sort them out.
Deliberating whether it should be a members section but some active contributors are not club members but this could be addressed

Hi, Reviewing the video, very nice by the way, I've noticed a thing that I need some clarification. When assembling the rear Y bushes I saw that You've assembled the packing washer on the outside of the slot of the rear mounting (thats the one that John sprayed with copper grease). In my car I found that washer was inside the bracket and on the outside its only a plain washer and a locking nut. The WM also has a draw with the same display; washer inside. So I'm puzzled... Miguel The WM only shows the Y bush moulded thick washer Miguel which is the same size as the large washer on the outside there is no mention of "packing washers" in the WM, Glenns springs were origonal and were fitted that way as mine were, I cant see the point in fitting them on the inside they are tight enough as it is! I have seen springs with no big washers inside or outside so maybe another production/age variation?

The big packing is washer is sometimes fitted inside or on the outside or not all! On 3 ltires ONLY there are 2 types of Y bush - the ones fitted with HD shockabsorbers are thicker and stiffer so do not have the washer fitted to pack out the space. So if it will fit it goes inside if not fit outside under nut to save it or discard and fit standard thick washer! Strictly 3½ Litres did originally require packer as they used the standard Y bush and no HD versions were listed. Most Y bushes fitted subsequently as service items were the HD type as more suitable to towing which a lot were used for (horsebox or boat trailer!) Springs may well be original on car but Y bushes are not likely to be even if they are better and longer lasting that modern replacements Both my 3½ Litres did have the washers fitted inside though but the new Y bushes would not permit this

I see. I got the packing washer info from the Parts Catalouge. It even looks diferent in the image. And in the WSM it doesnt exist, you're right, but its in the 3 liter Section so it may probably be the HD version... I have bought new Y bushes so probably this wont fit anyway. Thanks Miguel

Well done John and Glenn. I love these men's shed videos. Just a little grunting and groaning, remarkable restraint on the expletives and sagely advice from the Master (John, aka Yoda) to to his acolyte (Glenn, aka Luke Skywalker). The only thing missing is the hearty downing of refreshing 'cold' beer (Aussie tradition) after a job well done, but perhaps given your eminent status on the Board guys, a nice sauvignon blanc or a chiraz.

Glenn did a great editing job Vince probably a few expletives removed
