I currently have 205 70 15's on my car (think they must be Jensen rostyles). Can I put 195 65 15 on these wheels? What difference will this make?

They will probably raise the gear ratio and make the speedo "fast" That size was not an "approved" substitute and may also give poor ride and roadholding and look odd?

Think I'll wait for some 205's then, thanks!

I suppose similar problems will arise with 215 75 15's? But slower!

What is the best option for larger tyres in terms keeping the speedo accurate and not rubbing on full lock?

What size are you running on?
The general concensus seems to be 205 as a max with a high aspect ratio if possible. Wide and low is really too much for the suspension and especially the box and if the tyres are scuffing on full lock they are too big for the car! Low aspect just doesn't suit the car, but that's only my opinion.
I'm very pleased with the Bridgestone 195/15/80 I had fitted a few months ago. They're quiet, grip well, sturdy and seem to be a good substitute in appearance for the 670x15 crossplies O/E.

I'm starting to worry now! - although my car is still off the road being slowly worked on I have 235x80x15's fitted! - these are General Ameriway whitewalls - I'll be scrapping them anyway after sitting for 14 years but I love the size of them and they never rubbed.
Might explain why my front wheel bearing was knackered though!

Does anyone know where to get 185 whitewalls now as North Hants Tyres do not seem to list them anymore?

I've just lashed out and bought 5 whitewall tyres (narrow stripe).
Has anyone had any experience removing the blue protective coating that the manufacturers slop over the sidewalls?
I've only had 3 fitted so far. I've been taking the wheels 2 at a time to the tyre dealer and the blue stuff isn't coming off the 3rd tyre like it should. The stripe has retained a faint blue tint and if you try to scrub it gently with water and a soft brush (the normal way to get it off according to the dealer), there seems to be a risk of rubbing through the white stripe.
The first 2 tyres behaved normally. We think there may be a problem with that particular one so he's holding off on the remaining pair until the tyre company rep calls in later in the week.

Mine came off with White spirit, then just buffed up gleaming white with a little T Cut. Big Kev.

Thanks Kev. It'll be interesting to hear what the rep has to say.
I went for 205/75 R15 as these seem to be the only size available down here now and they seem reasonably close to the correct diameter of the old crossplies. They are slightly smaller which is preferable to the 6.50 R15 that were on it, as these are larger in diameter than the crossplies. The spare was a very old 195/75 R15 Goodyear whitewall (now dark brown) and it's significantly smaller than the 205s.
They're Maxxis brand from Taiwan. Time will tell.

Warick,
Can you post a photo of the car on its 205s?

Baldrick,
I'd be too embarassed to post a photo just now as the poor old girl looks the same as it did a year ago - bonnet up and an old towel covering the headless block.
BUT, if you can give me a few weeks I might have some progress as I now have the inlet manifold back from the engine shop.
As for the white stripe; the tyre company replaced the tyre but if you look closely you can still see a hint of blue residue on 2 of the stripes. I would strongly recommend to anyone buying whitewalls, that they make it very clear from the beginning that they won't pay for tyres that do not have unmarked white areas after the fitting has been completed. I was lucky but I can see how it could get awkward.

Having run the Club tyre scheme for the last 4 years I talked to many industry experts on tyres and the only permissible tyre width for a P5 wheel is 175 to 195. I doubt you would get into trouble with a 205 but a 225 or 235 could easily peel off the rim under heavy load such as swerving to avoid an obstacle. In the UK any MOT tester should fail the car if it has tyres that are too wide but they mostly don't. A P5 on its correct 185 / 80 / 15 tyre just handles so much better than any other type I have tried.

Out of interest... how come white wall tyres have become while line / white strip tyres?

Gratuitous thread bump ahoy!
I thought this the best place to ask - one of the Coupes I've got my eyes on as a potential purchase has fairly new white banded tyres on, the rest of the car is a peach but I've never been too keen on them so I was wondering if it's possible (or even advisable) to paint them out, as replacing all four could be quite expensive. I know some folk paint their tyres black for concourse etc, or used to.
Cheers in advance, Nidge.
Edit - just had another last minute thought... if I bought the car as it is, would anybody be prepared to do a straight swap...?

No need to worry, most whitewall tyres only have the white band on one of the two sidewalls, so the tyre can be removed from the wheel and remounted with the plain (unbanded) sidewall showing.
