LADIES... KINDLY REMOVE THE BEES FROM YOUR BONNETS OK.
1... THREE OR MAYBE FOUR YEARS AGO, GEOFF HAD P5 TYRES ON OFFER TO CLUB MEMBERS FOR 35 POUNDS PER TYRE, IF MEMORY SERVES, WHICH WAS A GOOD DEAL.
2... LIVING IN LONDON, WHERE NOT EVEN THE AIR IS FREE... THE STANDARD RATE IS 20 QUID PER TYRE.
3... I'M NOT TRYING TO PISS IN ANYONES CHERIOS HERE, MORE SO AS I FULLY UNDERSTAND AND APPRECIATE THE FACT THAT P5 COMMITTEE MEMBERS DO NOT GET PAID FOR ANY OF THE WORK THAT THEY DO.
4... ALL I'M POINTING OUT, IS THAT FIFTY QUID FOR ONE TYRE, THAT WILL NEED DELIVERING... FITTING... AND BALLANCING, IS NOT CONSIDERED A BRILLIANT DEAL FROM MY OWN PERSONAL POINT OF VIEW.
5... GLENN R.... TAKE YOUR FEET OUT OF YOUR POCKETS... THEN TAKE YOUR BACKSIDE DOWN TO SPECSAVERS... IF YOU WOULD CARE TO READ MY POSTING, I SAID EDEN PARK MOTORS ON THE A21 IN CATFORD, WHICH BEGS THE QUESTION, WHY DID YOU CONTACT A TYRE SHOP ON ELMERS END ROAD IN BECKENHAM? CATFORD IS IN LONDON... BECKENHAM IS IN KENT... THAT'S A BIT LIKE PHONING KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE FACT THAT YOUR BIG MAC DID NOT TASTE LIKE A WHOPPER WITH CHEESE... IT MAKES NO SENSE.
FOR SOMEONE WHO LIVES OUTSIDE A GREAT METROPOLITAIN CITY, WHERE PRICES ARE REASONABLE AND SERVICE INDUSTRIES ACTUALLY STILL EXIST, I DARE SAY THAT FIFTY POUNDS PER TYRE IS STILL A VERY REASONABLE OFFER... AND ONE THAT I AM IN NO WAY ATTEMPTING TO KNOCK... HOWEVER... FOR THE REST OF US, WHO REGULARLY DEAL WITH GREASE MONKEYS THAT DON'T WANT TO GET OUT OF BED FOR LESS THAN FIFTY QUID, AND WHO WOULD STRIPE YOU UP AS SOON AS LOOK AT YOU... FIFTY QUID PER TYRE IS NOT THAT GREAT AN OFFER, AS SADLY, WE DO NOT HAVE THE ABILITY TO INCLUDE FITTING AND BALLANCING AT A SIMILAR, REASONABLE PRICE.
*****AND DO NOT FORGET THAT THIS FORUM IS AN OPEN FORUM WHERE MEMBERS CAN EXPRESS OPINIONS THAT MAY WELL CONFLICT WITH YOUR OWN... WHICH IS A GOOD THING, SEEING AS HOW A "BITE YOUR LIP AND SAY NOTHING" MENTALITY IS ON PAR WITH A DICTATORSHIP.
WHEN THE FORUM RULES CHANGE AND IT STATES THAT PATRONS MUST COME HERE, READ WHAT IS BEING WRITTEN AND THEN AGREE WITH EVERY LAST WORD... I'LL CLOSE MY ACCOUNT BECAUSE IT WILL HAVE TURNED INTO NOTHING MORE THAN AN ELITIST BUNCO BOOTH.... UNTIL THAT DAY, IF I SEE SOMETHING THAT IS FLAWED OR HAS FLAWS... I WILL POINT THEM OUT... AND NOT BECAUSE I'M FEELING SPITEFUL... I'LL DO IT BECAUSE THE PERSON MAKING THE POST MAY NOT KNOW HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES.
I THANK YOU.

[/quote] Hi Mungo, you certainly have a way of expressing yourself so well with much humour and mirth.. I google searched EPMC as I am after a set of Cooper Tyres for my P5B Coupe. I was under the illusion that the one in Kent is a sister company as the web site is the same?? They would also be connected to their sister company for tyre stocks. That is how tyre companies operate. Anyway, I'm off for a "Casey Burger" those others turn my stomach. Ooh, this getting a bit spitty now! The reason I picked up the mantle of P5 tyre procurer is that I resent certain suppliers getting a monopoly on the supply of vital parts that we all require. I have had enough conversations with owners to establish that this is a real problem. When I got hold of the £35 Hankooks there were postings of cheaper tyres yet when followed up, none existed, and so it is this time with Eden Park Motors wherever they may reside. I do not take life too seriously but soon, when the cheapest set of tyres available to keep a P5 on the road, will set an owner back £600, I suspect there will be no laughs. My Coupe is currently shod with Kumhos that I paid £28 each for and £35 to get all 4 fitted. The Kumhos sat in my garage roof for 4 years until I needed them. I bought 5 of the Hankook last year with the same idea in mind. G

Has anyone had a good deal on new tyres recently? I'm in the market for a set after an embarrassingly long time since I last bought any & a front blow-out on the M20 at the weekend. I'm seeing Federals for £50 odd on Blackcircles.com.

Not had a cheap deal but fantastic service from Longstone tyres in Doncaster when replaced all five tyres last year. Admittedly I bought some pricey Michelins to replace my 20 year old set but they sorted the wheels so that the truest one were on the front and balanced them properly (not something that most tyre fitters can do with 70s BL out of true wheels). In the 32years the car has been in the family it has never felt as stable at an indicated 100mph or utterly free of vibration (useful for embarrassing pesky tail gating 3 series BMWs). Lucky enough to drive and be a passenger in all kinds of so called prestige cars as part of my job but always a pleasure to drive a real car when on the rare ocassions I am back in the UK.

Doncasters a little far from me but thanks anyway.
Can somebody remind me of the speed-rating I need please?

Hankook 185/80R15. Set of five tyres, bought last year but never fitted. £250.
Buyer collects or arranges own collection or I can drop them off at the Bristol Classic Car Show this weekend.

Minimum is SR - VR not really necessary and make sure they are NOT C rated

I hope 195 isn't considered "dangerous" I'm having my Bridgestone 195x80x15S fitted tomorrow! On a personal note, I try not to buy anything which supports industry in the Far East and I believe Federal Tyres are made in Taiwan. 205s are dangerous as I found out on the M4 once. The right rear blew in the fast lane sending me tailing into the central reservation. Very close shave, lucky escape.

I do not like 205's either - but I had one blow out on the M42 and maintained full control whereas I had Avon roadmaster radial 185/15 blow out it spun the car round and bent the wheel and I was going more slowly

Thanks Phil. Is the C rating something to do with the van tyres?
Those Hankooks would be a strong consideration for me but I think carriage would put the price up too far.

Yes "C" rating means commercial and they are too stiff for a P5/P5B and have too low a speed rating.
Hankooks are very good if you can get them - I have several now on both P4 and P5's

I have managed to get hold of a new batch of 48 Federals this month and they are again reserved for P5 and P4 club members. 4 went out today so there are plenty left. Prices now are £125 for 2, £240 for 4 and £300 for 5. Prices include vat and delivery to your home address. This is way below North Hants Tyres who wanted £84 each plus delivery and Vintage Tyre Supplies who wanted £89.40 plus delivery this week. Just contact me direct if you need any at w.g.a@virgin.net. I keep following up cheaper on line suppliers but they never seem to have stock.

Whoops! Having digested all the threads on new tyres and the life of existing tyres I have a wee problem. My treads go back pre 1986. I would order new tyres if I had somewhere to put them. But hey ho I've got to finish the rebuild first.

There are currently (April 2012) no tyres available in the correct size 185/80/15. I think the specialists have bought them all up. If any P5 owner is looking for tyres, let me know as I am trying very hard to import some more at a sensible price and will let you know if I succeed. Geoff Arthur w.g.a@virgin.net

Geoff, today I have ordered 4- off 185/80/15 Hankook tyres from a local Kumho dealer as he tells me tha Kumho no longer make this tyre. The price is£78.00 including fitting, replacement valves if required, balancing and VAT. I think that this is a reasonable deal. The Federals mentioned earlier are budget tyres with the 2nd lowest traction rating and the lowest temperature rating, on the UTQG ratings scale and I think owners should be aware of this. Vredestiens are also available but a bit pricier at £118 + delivery + fitting + vat .

Almost double than they used to be 4 years ago when Kumo stopped making this size but cheap compared to others

They are very similar to the Kumho that I have on my P5B but, as you say, Kumho do not make this size anymore. The Federal is actually a good tyre and more than adequate for a P5. Owners have reported back that they are pleased with the handling, low noise and appearance. Federal was offered during the period when there were no Hankook or Kumho in production and was good value at £60 each delivered when Vintage Tyre Supplies charge £96 each for them. Hankook do not seem to be reliably available so it would then be Vredestein at nearer £150 each by the time they are fitted or Michelin or Avon but those are being sold at well over £200 per tyre.

I bought 4 of Dunlop 9000 for my Volvo, great tyres but made in Japan. Most tyres are made in the far east now even Avon.
