Ebay are well aware of this listing & previous listings of this vehicle because I have spoken to them by telephone & emailed them loads of information.
This was several weeks ago when it first appeared on the scene again !
In true ebay fashion, they have done nothing !!
The car is still listed despite it being obvious it's a scam.
What can you do ?

I haven't seen these listings (thanks to those who've posted the warnings by the way) but have seen similar on ebay over the years. I have found that reporting them to ebay using the "Circumvention of ebay fees" category tends to get the auction pulled faster than any other action. You can truthfully use this if the 'seller' is giving contact details on the ad (trying to get you to buy outside of ebay) or asking you to make offers direct to them etc.

It's rather sad that ebay don't do anything about these scams, but anyone buying a car or anything else for thousands from someone who joined ebay only a few days before and who wonts allow viewing of it untill after money has changed hands must realise they are asking for trouble.

How easy would it be for this forum to set up a database of cars for sale and previous sales history on the net? I appreciate this will mean more work for someone unless it was a members only accessible page that anyone could edit. I'm thinking along the lines of all cars seen for sale being added to the page with any known history. Over a period of months/years a large database would grow showing a cars sales history. This could benefit both sellers and buyers, buyers would have the confidence to make the journey to see the car knowing the car is know to the club database and the provenance is known. Clearly caveat emptor still applies but it could be useful.. For genuine sellers they may well attract more potential buyers for the reasons given above. I'm sure it would need a certain amount of discussions and thinking about but the information is out there and in the public domain so once collated the resource could offer huge benefit to all. Am I being unrealistic and to simplistic or does it sound feasible? Over to you.

My first thought is the Data Protection Act, which may prevent such information being divulged. New European legislation is very strict - this is one of the reasons why Proboards, our forum hosts, had to 'upgrade' this and other forums. The club has its own database of cars, which over the years has been added to as new owners are found or cars are valued for insurance purposes. I hear what you are saying, but I really don't think it will be workable, even more so as there are so few instances of 'dodgy' cars being advertised.

David, I'm no expert but doesn't the fact the information is in the 'public domain' make a difference? My assumption is the fact anyone could have looked at the listing when it was live means there's no liability under the DPA but as I say I'm no expert and of course what seems perfectly sensible and logical don't mean its legal! Pity because it would be great to look back over the last 10 years say of Ebay Rover listings et al.

You may well be right. Data law is not straightforward or prone to common sense. I know our list of membership details are subject to these laws. We do not in any circumstances release these lists to anyone.
It people are happy to put a listing of their car/s on this forum then I don't see that being a problem, though it may open up the possibility of these cars reg numbers and details being cloned in the future.
As previously mentioned, I don't see possible scams being too much of a problem and as we have plenty of owners on this forum who can usually 'smell a rat', then perhaps the forum and it's members are the best prevention.
