Here's the next instalment guys for those of you that are interested in this modification. Rather than repost my work directly here, I'm just going to link it to the MG Magnette Forum so that you can follow the text, photos and work completed so far. Couping the Magnette_The Passenger Side.

Vince you may have gained the impression that you are more technically inclined than I. That would be the right impresssion.
Whilst having the utmost respect for your ability, understanding that you just have to change something because it's there if I now get into your MagCoup would the floor collapse or the roof sink in? Or any other consequences that I could not conceive?

Truly Peter, I don't know how you arrived at that conclusion! The posting you're looking at is Part 2. The driver's side alterations have been completed. I don't see any of my work as a contest of skills; that's the preserve of school boys. Frankly, I'm perplexed by your comment...it's actually against my personal life philosophy. (I was a teacher for the greater portion of my working life) I have very little, virtually nil admiration for competitive individuals, as it's primarily ego driven. What I do admire, are creative and resourceful individuals who pit their skills and determination against a task, as you do in your extensive body work rebuilds. As for the Magnette collapsing...obviously you haven't seen a MG Magnette (ZA/ZB/Varitone) in the flesh, or perhaps viewed the body structure schematics. These cars were some of the first full monocoque designs produced by BMC. As such, they were heavily over engineered with regard to structural integrity. The sill section comprises 3 box sections all of heavy gauge sheet metal. Once the B pillar is welded back in, the rear door sectioned and welded around it's perimeter into the remaining opening, the car will have a greater structural integrity than when it came out of the factory. If you go to the very beginning of the post "Couping the Magnette", you'll realise that I decided on this build modification after a house fire (unfortunately mine) severely damaged the car. Many individuals would have just written it off and bought another. I've had the car in one guise or another since I was 19, so there's a lot of sentiment attached to it. When I was a toddler (my mother was Austrian) I would crawl about the house with a small screw driver repeating the word 'arbeiten' (work) and that's what I've always done. Similarly, my cousin who became an accountant always had pristine toys that remained that way for years. I couldn't help but disassemble mine. It's just the way we're wired. I hope that clarifies it for you. As an aside, I can jack the vehicle up at the extreme front corner (say the DS) and even as a 4 door sedan, all the doors will open and shut perfectly without any binding. Try that with a P5 coupe and it's a different matter. This is the same motorbike rebuilt. The engine and radiator were undamaged (apart from the engine sensors)as were the frame and front forks/wheel. Even the computer and battery were still ok. That's also the original exhaust cleaned and 'Jethot' coated.

Hi Vince,
Thanks for the explanations! I am even more impressed. The bike must be better than new and the MagCoup is going the same way.
I had forgotten about the fire. I know. How could I?
It's a joy seeing how far a number of members go and the perseverence and skills that they show. My mother was alone, not mechanically inclined and broke so I missed a good example for using my hands. Can't remember seeing a screwdriver!
Was unaware of the Mags chassis structure.
Wish you strength with the rest of the project.
Regards, Peter

Hi Vince, nice work and lots of patience required ! Can I ask how you managed to cut the door so cleanly and straight? The job you have done there is exactly the job I have to do on my convertible. The car was (re)constructed originally with the rear doors welded and the fronts left as is. Therefore I also have to move the b/c post back approx 6 inches, lengthen the front doors and shorten the backs. I dont think I could keep a jigsaw straight over that distance and the door is too deep anyway! Tips welcome

Hi Roy, keep watching this thread and l'll guide you as best l can. For cutting the door skins I use a thin cutting/slitting disc in an angle grinder. I'll post some info to make it clearer. The thin discs cut like a hot knife through butter, so wear protective gear and keep it away from your fingers. I've also worked out an easier way to join the 2 half door sections together for a cleaner internal finish. It' slightly less labour intensive and reinforces the long join. Since your car is a convertible Roy I'd be cautious about the sectioning process as lengthening the front door will place more load on the box and sill sections below the front door. I gather there's been substantial reinforcement built into this area as there's no longer a roof arch to transfer some of the flexing loads imposed on the body front to rear. On a convertible the box and sill structures take all the load unless the front sub-frame was extended rearwards? It'll look really nice though with properly lengthened front doors as the proportions will be properly balanced. PS. It's cold miserable, wet and windy today so I don't think I can get much done.

Yes absolutely, the sills were reinforced but before I do anything about moving the B/C post Im going to ensure there is a lot more added. The car is already convertible and self supporting but its going to get more along the whole length of the sill and up into the front and rear structures. Then it will be so bottom heavy it wont ever flip over Cold wet and miserable?? Would we call that slightly overcast in England?
