By coincidence a picture of the car will be in the next issue of Take Five (page 3) Chuckles, I have sent you a couple more photos by email.

John would be delighted to see his car back at rallies and on the forum. He was a regular and knowledgeable contributer and took in many rallies. He used to come up as far as Classics on the Common in Harpenden in the early days and that was a fair old trip for an evening event. I think he'd also be happy to see his car remaining in Dorset!

Thank you for those kind words. All being well I hope to continue in the same vane.... it has started with the Sherborne show this last Sunday and hopefully to meet up at the Fox & hounds at Canford on Monday 5th. is that correct?

Lovely to see a picture of John, the Dorset Flyer.
The badge bar is now nearly populated with my old badges found in a distant cupboard somewhere! It tooks some cleaning but they are looking good.
At last the rev counter is now working. I did gain an extra rev counter but it lied.... it was showing 1500 revs at tickover, and managed to be about 1000 revs proud all the time. So while the old one was out of the car it gave me time to do some cleaning and a few drops of watch oil and wey-hey!
The gearbox is not doing so well, changed the oil and cleaned the filters - its a bit better, but a full repair is on the cards. I am going to keep a lookout for a MkIII basket case as a doner.

sorry about your gearbox so will you fit the later engine with the BW 35 box.

If one comes to hand, quite possibly, as they would be matched on the crankshaft. I gather there is quite a difference in the crank and with the later BW-35 box, a higher compression engine would be better suited and improve overall performance.
Hopefully if I can find a MKIII that has a reasonable or rebuildable engine and gear box that would be the answer. As a bonus if it had better front seats, the same colour as the existing, and they have the headrests, even better..... and..... if there was a heated rear screen.... but that would be over the top a bit!
But you never know........

The Mk3 onward seats are not as good though and it would not be original any more with the wrong power unit and seats

Can I point out that I had a Mk2 rover 3 litre with a DG box, I successfully replaced the DG auto with a BW 35auto from a mark 3, you cannot fit a manual gearbox because there is a difference between the crankshaft on the auto equipped cars and the manual cars. Also the later MK3 had a 3.54 ratio axle instead of the 3.9 ratio fitted to cars equipped with the DG auto.

Wow! it looks like I have been taken to task here!! I only wanted headrests and the picnic table behind the seat...
Allan, Are you saying the BW35 will directly fit the MkII engine with a DG Box?
That axle ratio difference....3.54 ratio axle instead of the 3.9, can you clear my thoughts on this. Given a road speed, is that higher engine revving if I use the BW35? Speedo readings come to mind as well.
Just to throw another spanner in the works... The rev counter I acquired that was a bit ambitious on the rev counting (about 1000 to many). I intend to convert from Positive earth to Negative earth, for many reasons. Is there somewhere that can service/repair the Tacho, and convert it to Negative earth?

That axle ratio difference....3.54 ratio axle instead of the 3.9, can you clear my thoughts on this. Given a road speed, is that higher engine revving if I use the BW35? Speedo readings come to mind as well. If you just change the BW35 for the DG then the engine RPM at any given speed will be the same. If you change the 3.9 diff for the 3.54 then the engine RPM will be lower at any given speed. (Higher numerically = lower ratio, and vice-versa). If the BW35 is a direct bolt in replacement for the DG then I'd do it in a heartbeat. Just make sure you use a P5 BW35 (5 position selector) not a P5B (six position selector) box. If you wanted to use the latter you'd have to fit the P5B tunnel cover and gearlever. (Which I would assume isn't a problem).

Sorry if you get the impression I am taking you to task here, the mark 3 rover 3 litre had the gear selector on the steering column as well it is a question of using all the parts from a MK3 3 litre, I would suggest contacting David Green to see if he is breaking a Mk3 Auto and do a deal on the parts, if you were to go down the road of fitting the tunnel from a 3.5 V8 you could then fit the 3.5 Litre box using the linkage from a 3.5 rover, the 35 box is a good conversion. I covered over 70,000 miles in my Mk2, I could be wrong here but is the BHP figure the same for the Mk2 and Mk3 121BHP.
Hope this is helpful

If I did change I would want to keep the column change, even if it means juggling about with the decal. I just love the little ring pointer. Not too keen on the tunnel changer though.
I don't think I will be going so far as changing tunnels, but I will contact David Green, I gather he is a dealer or a chap that knows about things. Excuse my ignorance but I am still learning who's who here. How do I contact him?
I think I have the ratio's clearer in the old bonce, so now it’s a case of finding a suitable replacement gearbox, or having the existing overhauled but that is about £1200 locally! (possibly more at this rate)!
I am in no rush as the car is still mobile, but as soon as a replacement is found then its into the workshop, possibly for the winter. The works will include some paint and minor body repairs as well as curing several leaks on the lower deck
