Hi Dean,I'm no mechanic but if it was me firstly I'd check wiring/connectors then the alternator belt & the voltage regulator.

Dean, the voltage regulator is on the bulkhead near the fuse box. It's a rectangular object about the size of a beer mat with some seriously heavy duty wires connected to it. Initial check is to make sure the wires are actually connected. The method to do further checks is, for now, lost in a dusty corner of my memory...

Check to see if there is any charge happening at the battery (probably not) by using a multi-meter set at 20 volts. Place the probes across the battery terminals. You should have something around 14 volts if it's charging.

You should have something around 14 volts if it's charging. The battery reads 12.65 v , with the engine running 12.05 v,,, the ammeter in the car also reads below zero . Does this mean the alternator ive fitted isnt any good or could it be the relay or regulator box still ?

Nope all the fuses are good . Dean, if you check your email I have sent you the Lucas diagnostic information that will enable you to locate what is wrong, as long as you have a voltmeter you will find the fault, good luck, it's quite easy. The fuses are for external components, there are no fuses in the charging circuit.

Sounds like they cut the wires to remove the lamps, best to solder the wires together if you can and heat shrink, as they get wet under the wheel arch . I tried to post up the files on here but photobucket won't accept "adobie " files

A couple of cables have been added as well , i need to strip alot of the lights off , might even be better to take them all off to make sure there isnt any earths or more bare wires . Looking forward to the challenge and learning more about my car. Thanks

Paul, does anything else work on the car that should work with the ignition on? e.g. wipers, heater, indicators, etc.

Hi could you send me the Lucas trouble shooting sheet as my ignition light and oil light do not come on when I put the ignition on regards paul Is the car a coupe or saloon? the fuse that feed the oil light/sensor also feeds the indicators, fuel gauge and temp gauge so if these are working it's the switch or the bulb or both? The ignition light? bulb, 3AW, 4TR possibly the alternator ? Both items use fuse 3-4!

My Red ignition light was staying on late last year and it was cured by fitting a new set of carbon brushes in my Alternator.
