Today the correct tunnel carpet arrived for my car and JRW pulled out all the stops as they were shut all last week and the company who make the carpets were closed until last Wednesday anyway you can see this is the tunnel carpet for the saloon if you look back you will see the other carpet which I was sent is for a coupe the square cut out is for the ashtray in the rear seats of the coupe, now I assume that the end which is folded over goes to console end but if anyone knows different please let me know. Saloon tunnel carpet. One end is folded over is this the console end?

I am now trying to fit my new carpets but the tunnel carpet is a nightmare to fit it will not fit tight against the tunnel I have used extra padding to try and give it a better fit it's helped but is not the answer, I have looked at a few P5 at old Warden and Woburn rally and none of the tunnel carpets fit well on the back part of the tunnel, the only carpet I have seen that fits correct are John W and he made his own so any tips would be welcome.

I have just fitted new carpets and experienced the same problem and after padding the TOP of the tunnel only the problem is now non existent. If you place a straight edge on top of the tunnel from the rear seat towards the gear lever you will see that this area of the tunnel is not straight but slightly concave, after filling this low area with padding my wrinkled carpet problem vanished.

Thanks Steve for the advice I will have ago this morning and use your method of padding.
I have tried your method but it does not work for me ( I am sure it's just me) so after two and a half days I have given up and will just fit them as best I can, Steve if you could post a photo of your tunnel carpet that would be great I will post some shots when it's all back.

Looks very nice Steve, also your seats. Did you get these redone with new leather?

Great job you have done so far, it is quite tricky to get correct but worth it in the end. I would say the carpet on top of your transmission tunnel looks fine, but I see what you are saying regarding the bolt pulling the carpet into a crease. If the bolt is long enough could you fit a spacer behind the carpet to prevent it being pulled in when tightening the bolt? Or maybe cut a dart shape into it parallel to the floor so it that would be covered over with the adjacent carpet.

Brian it is down to what you use for backing if you look at my picture you will see the extra stiff layer which is the original one most people throw it away I would take a guess Steve made his own carpets

Oh and not forgetting the retaining clips.

Actually I never thought the carpets in the 3.5 Litres fitted well even when new in the back and certainly not as good as in the earlier 3 Litres
Yours and JW's are an improvement
When I retrieve and refit our 3 Litre Coupe's carpets shortly I will compare as these are original and did not appear to have shrunk. Hope the moths have not got to them
