Hi Looks like i will have to change the rear heater control. Noticed today that the Speaker workings is not on the one fitted to the car. I have another with it all connected but wondering if its a fairly easy job or not as i dont wont to lay the car up for long. The new one i have has the wire connected to it whitch is quite long. Has anybody tackeled this and if so is it simple to do ?.

Colin, Can we clarify why the rear heater control needs changing? And then whilst doing it I take it you want to wire in a speaker? I am in the process of fitting a rear speaker in my 3 litre whilst doing other work. The rear boot panel needs to come off, the petrol pump, the rear seat squab and then the parcel shelf. This gives access to a metal blanking plate held in by three screws and a lot of Dum-Dum. I made a copy of the plate in quarter inch ply as it is easier to cut a hole for the circular speaker. I have only done the job because the car is stripped down. It allows for retrofitting a radio in the future should I decide to have one.

The rear heater control is just a 2 speed switch for the fan. My car has a rear speaker, but no controls at the rear as it is possible to balance the speakers on the radio.

Hi Stantondavies/lagain the rear heater control on my P5B has an integrated speaker switch which i assume turns down the speakers in the rear. The one on the car althought it has a knob on the top it does nothing as there is no control below it. The replacement i have includes the workings for the speakers plus three small black wires which i can only assume connects to the back speakers. I threfore need to change the complete unit so the speaker volume control allows the rear speakers to be turned up or down. It is this that i want to know if it is a complicated procedure or not as the replacement has quite along wire on it and has a coupling for an earth connection i think and two/three cant remember other wires.Does this go under the chassis to connect to the Matrix or does it connect elsewhere. Thats why i was wondering if anybody has replaced one at all.

I have a 3 litre without a pre-fitted speaker in the centre of the parcel shelf, so have no experience of P5Bs. You seem certain that there are speakers fitted which begs the question as to why they are not wired up to a balance control. Presumably you have traced the speaker wiring, so I suggest you test wire your balance control into the feed. I can't imagine it is going to be too difficult a job if the speakers are already fitted. Good luck!

There is just one rear speaker as standard in the middle of the shelf. I will be leaving the wiring in mine but won't bother with it as the quality isn't great.
Search for posts by Baldric. He has done what I intend to do and fitted a new dual driver replacement speaker in the original space using it as effectively a left and right rear setup. Same in the front and fit a modern head unit that looks like an old one. Check the autosound website for what you can get nowadays.

Sorry if I have come in a bit late on this one It was never intended to be a balance control merely a position for a potentiometer (variable resistor) or switch to fade out/shut off the rear speaker when fitted if required? "I have only seen one done" It was a pre "ICE" DIY mod done by many young men in the 60's on various cars before the luxury of FM and stereo

The rear speaker control on my 1971 P5B Saloon acts exactly like a front / rear balance controller. Turn it fully one way and only the rear speaker is on. Turn it fully the other way and only the front speaker is on. It has what looks like the original Philips 'Turnolock' radio.

That is the correct operation for the mono front/rear fader fitted to Radiomobiles
