I need a pair of rear springs or at the least have the existing re-tempered.
I favour buying new, unfortunately the only source at present appears to be JRW with some 'Heavy Duty' ones, and they are on holidays so not sure if they are in stock.
I am going to replace the lot - but all I have at present the the rear bushes!

A couple of tips. 1) do not let the rear axle dangle from the springs for a prolonged period (put axle stands under the rear axle) or the Y bush will shear apart. 2) check the rear locating hole in the spring is in the right place. I had to extend the hole o a slot in order not to distort the Y bushes at rest.

Also look at fitting a set of 'poly-air' boosters. These units are a low pressure air bag that fits just in front of the axle. A bicycle pump is all that is required. I've had a set on my coupe for over 20 years.

There is a place in Portsmouth that can recondition springs. They are very good had some transit ones done there a few years ago. Made all the difference

I've found a place near me in Coleshill that will recon springs too. Not ready to do them yet as I like the ride height but they will need doing.

All I have to do now is fit them!
No Rest for the wicked (or the good ones.......)

Chuck, where did you get the springs? I bought the whole lot from a member of our wessex group. He had purchased them to fit to a car but never did. They all came from JRW. Hope that helps

Hope that helps Thanks Chuck.The reason I asked is that I think JRW is the ONLY supplier of rear springs and I know he's on holiday at the moment. I thought you may have found another source. The fitting will be an interesting thread when you get started.

I think that you're correct, JRW are the only suppliers of new springs. I have heard it said that todays spring temperers are not as good as the old'ns! they do not hold the rating very long, so as I do not want to do this again I opted for new.
I am hoping to get started in about two weeks after some R&R if I am lucky!

That's a very nice neat set up you have there Vince,I had a search and couldn't find a supplier here. Are they still available in OZ I did find these though air-suspension.co.uk/products.html they are for small commercials they could be altered with different brackets for rovers maybe. Or even replace the "cart spring" we all have completely for a extra comfy ride.

Yes, they are still available in OZ Steve. There's a link at the bottom of the last photo that has contact details of a dealer. The version you're looking at is about double the price of the red Polyairs.
Cart springs certainly is the right term for the rear suspension of a P5. A 4 bar rear link system incorporating a panhard rod and air suspension on the rear would make a world of difference to the ride quality and handling.

I haven't started yet but now in a quandary!
It was said that ‘at-rest’ no load and empty that the back end does sag, strangely even with a nose weight of 75kg the ride height doesn't alter, maybe an inch - no more. This leads me to think that there is little "spring" left in the leaf springs - hence the replacement program. Certainly the drive train angles determine some attention, but I do take the point that the rear may be up a bit more than is desirable and may be harsher as the springs are labelled "heavy duty".
I am hoping that towing with an increased nose weight that the new springs will settle quickly. I am familiar with air ride assisters and yes they do what they are supposed to.
So now what? I will persevere with replacing the springs as they are over 50 years old, all the bushes are completely shot so at least some good may come of it. Watch this space as they say and see what the outcome will be. I think it will be a project for sometime in September at the moment with all that’s’ going on at present.

Now that you've got the springs, I would carry on and replace them if I was in your position.From memory,the JRW spring leaves are much thicker with fewer leaves and no inserts so you're going to have a harsher ride. Perhaps some heavy duty rear shockers might help(more expense!) I would also force open the leaves and fill every surface with CV grease.
