Looking very good all the same...How do you upload pics to the forum? The forum upload system is much simpler than it used to be but you have to choose a host first. I use Photobucket as it's free and easy to use. So first step is open an account with them and then upload your images to them from your computer or other media. After you've done that select the insert image icon from the menu line above, go back to Photobucket and copy and paste into the "Image URL" ( I always clear the box before pasting) Your image should then appear but there is a limit to how much data you can load into one posting, that's why I posted twice. The more computer literate you are the more you will be able to resize and get more images in one go.

The more computer literate you are the more you will be able to resize and get more images in one go. The narrative I did with the images seems to have disappeared! All I can see are the images. After explaining what the picture was, I went on to ask the question as to how the wheels might have been finished originally. As each wheel seems to be slightly different a template wouldn't have been of much use. Would the wheels have been sprayed or handpainted? Spraying would mean a lot of masking with a better finish. Handpainting would be quicker but maybe with not such a good result. Either way, the process seems laborious and time consuming in factory conditions.

Lovely looking wheels you have there.
Did you use anything in particular for the Satin Black or just standard steel wheel paint please ?

I just used a general "professional" quality satin black spray ordered off Ebay. I did use a black etch primer first after removing every trace of the old paint followed by a bit of scouring to provide a key then degreasing with brake cleaner.

Great job! My wheels were also tatty with gloss Hammerite inserts showing every lump. I did same as you. Upol etch primer and good old halfords satin black. Chrome isn't perfect but the wheels look a lot better. Here's one I prepared earlier! www.dropbox.com/s/b21e7f22adobjh5/IMG00097-20130625-0842.jpg

Well I think you've done a great job. Any chance of an ebay link please ? Thanks. It was a while ago I ordered the paint but I'll post the details of the etch primer and the satin later today. Here's the stuff I used for the last two wheels. I can't remember what I used for the other two! I just generally look for any paint which says "professional" on it. These size cans are easily enough for two wheels. I don't enough about paint to say whether these are the best but, like most paint jobs, it's the prep which is most important. My tips would be to completely remove all the old paint using paint stripper etc, key and degrease the surface and not be too fussy about the masking as it's easier to remove the excess paint after spraying by tracing the chrome outline and lightly scraping away the overspray. The only bit that needs careful masking is the circular bit where the wheel centre badge fits. Also handy to have some satin black brush paint to touch in if necessary. A template's no real use as each wheel is slightly different! I wonder how it was done at the factory?

I wondered that too. Like you said each wheel is different. I found some very easy to mask with clear lines round the centre cap and others nothing at all.
Nb Alan if that was your car on the copy of practical classics that was a coincidence. Sadly I have to recycle my Mage after a time due to space but I couldn't bring myself to throw that one so it sits on the workbench!

It was the second time n there and a bit of a surprise as I was told one of the other cars in the feature would be the cover shot. I too have a load of magazines that I really should recycle but... I've tried all sorts of paints on the wheels over the years but only for touching up. I've decided now to go down a different route which the purists won't like.

If you check out painted Alloy wheels on new cars it's absolute precision obviously done by a robot. On our cars, the Rostyles are quite rough castings with considerable differences between each wheel so they must have been done by hand.I wonder what sort of primer was used on the brand new chromium plating and how they got a key which seems to have been quite durable. It would have been interesting to see a new wheel and check out the standard of the work although I suspect some cars still have the original paint in place. Not important really but when you're labouriously painting each wheel you think about how it was originally done and for those of you in to Greek Legends food for thought of the poor painter working for BL or maybe Ruberry Owen in the 1970's! .............................. "The gods had condemned Sisyphus to ceaselessly rolling a rock to the top of a mountain, whence the stone would fall back of its own weight. They had thought with some reason that there is no more dreadful punishment than futile and hopeless labour."
