Hello
Just purchasing a P5B Coupe. Used to have a P5B saloon for about 15 years until the early 2000s - but thought it was time to get 'back in the saddle'.
Much has changed in the last dozen years though, including insurance as there seems to be more choice for classic car owners. More choice means more confusion though!
Are there any companies that members would highly recommend?

Are there any companies that members would highly recommend? I've used Norton Insurance Brokers for many years. The actual policy is with Chaucer Insurance. Premiums are very reasonable at just under £100 pa for agreed value including Legal Protection Cover and they seem well organised but I've not had to make a claim which is the ultimate test!

I use Arian Flux but that was because I wanted business cover and they seem to be the only ones who do this. They are annoying though because they will not accept an approved valuation from one of our valuation officers but seem to think a few random photos can allow them to judge it's value.

My Insurance is with Hagerty. My premium is £83.48 with Agreed Value and limited mileage. I also have breakdown cover and if an other driver has there insurance whilst driving your car they are covered fully Comp. All the other usual things apply as with other insurance cos. I must admit mine is that because our Club has a discount with them if we insure with them which makes it so low. Dont know how much it would be if you just contacted them thou. Colin

Many thanks guys. I will contact your suggestions a.s.a.p. as I'm being quoted some astronomical sums, largely because I am based in central London and the fact this will be my only car - even though the car will be parked in a secure garage and used for weekends and leisurely, limited mileage.

I would have thought that the Rover p5 club would have negotiated a good deal with an Insurance firm as we have in NewZealand. We have AA classic car insurance and to qualify you have to be a member of a car club. There is a milage restriction of 5000ks per year If this doesn't exsist maybe the club could look at this might help offset people complaining about increased membership fees. Just a thought

Hi, I am West London based. P5b saloon ; garaged overnight : Insurance is Social / Domestic & Commute / Agreed value is circa £90 from Peter James 0121 - 506 6040. They are very helpful & knowledgeable on classics : I have just included my other classic car on the same policy for the same price! Peter James are worth a call. Regards Julian

...this will be my only car You may struggle to get classic insurance on that basis as one of the questions classic insurers ask is if you have access to another vehicle.

Thanks for your reply Julian. Do you have another, main vehicle though? As 'eastmidsrep' has mentioned, these insurers get very sniffy if you don't have access to another vehicle. But I shall call Peter James.

I have used Peter Best for many years and they now in fact insure our entire classic fleet of 7 - all main cars, agreed values and commuting/occasional business use. They offer very flexible and competetive cover but car club membership is required.
Other insurers can be very picky

Having now got my pride and joy [pick it up tomorrow] I need to insure it. I would like to ring around the suggested insurance companies that have been recommended on here. A friend of mine with a classic Jag is with K.G.M. insurance. Anyone else with this company, if so what are they like please? Question,,,When they ask "are you a member of a club" do I just tell them that I am a member of the Rover p5 Club or do I have to have a member number? if I need a number how do I go about this? Thanks in advance for helping this rather nervous new owner.

You don't pay for the forum, but you do to join the Rover P5 Club. You can pay on-line, for 'one year' for the period up to April 2016 or if you wish join for 'three years' which will finish in 2018. You will get back issues of the magazines (depending on stock) from October 2014 See the last two payment options for UK, European or Rest of the World here: www.roverp5club.org.uk/paypal.htmlYou can also join by post if that is easier. Simply download the form. HTH

I was with FJ for a number of cars and since 1988 but changed all to Peter Best and now paying considerably less than that rate and which includes business use and commuting which FJ do not seem to encourage now. FJ Service score and VFM = 1 minus 10 and +100 for PB
I suppose its down to what you need and the service you require
Membership of a recognized car club is of course a mandatory requirement for whole period of cover - forums do not count!

I would have thought that as a perk of your membership the P5 club would have negotiated a discount with an insurance company in the Uk as the Association of Rover car clubs in New Zealand did with AA insurance over here. Thus giving another reason to join a rover car club.

Currently Rover P5 Club members can get a 20% discount on car insurance - see back page of Take Five for details.

The company advertising on the back of Take Five didn't offer me any discount - despite me telling them I'm a member of the P5 Club. They were actually quite sniffy. So I just took my custom elsewhere.

If you look at the back of Take Five it clearly states '20% discount for Rover P5 Club members.' I think you need to supply your membership number.

I am insured with Cherished Vehicle and found them very helpful, James who is a Classic Car enthusiast went to Duxford last year so while he was there he took photographs of my car to save me doing it for my agreed value on my policy "that's what I call being helpful". I spoke to James this morning on your behalf and he couldn't understand why you hadn't received their first class helpful service and why you weren't offered club discount, they don't I know give discounts on very low cover premiums! James is happy to have a chat with you as to why you had a problem
