Hi guys, hoping someone can help. I replaced the bottom seal in the steering box a couple of years ago and everything has been fine since ( apart from the continuing drip out the bottom of the box) . Now I am getting, especially when cold, air bubbling up into the res and even faoming out through the cap vent. After a short drive things seem to settle down an bit and when hot it seems normal enough with no air coming through. Any Ides? Have bled it through a couple of times using the nipple but no air coming out there now. Also when on hard lock shortly after setting off you can feel the resistance and "lumps" throught he steering wheel. Also have seen ign light come on at hard lock...not good all in all. No signs of leak.

Have you changed the power steering filter. Might just be the cause of the problems. Replacements can be found, or even better, if you are a Rover Pl5 Club member, take a look at the spares page in Take Five

Haven't changed filter as didn't know there was one!! Will see about getting one then. How does a bad filter cause the foaming when cold?

Unscrew the top of the reservoir and you will find it inside. If it has not been changed for a long time, which is highly likely, then you might be pleasantly surprised after a new one has been fitted. I am no expert, as many here will testify, but if the pressure has increased then it is more likely to foam. Having cold fluid makes its thicker, so may affect the bubbling? Just a thought. PAS FILTER CLUB MEMBERS ONLY Price is £10 + £3.50 p&p UK. Euro postage £4.00. NO VAT MkIII P5 & P5B . See page 15 of Take Five for ordering instructions.

Many moons ago (20 years plus) on the advice of a now departed friend and avid Rover P5 owner, I removed the original filter element paper from the power steering filter and soldered fine mesh brass gauze around the perimeter top and bottom. (Similar to the screen filter on the auto trans) This has worked perfectly since and the car was a daily driver until a year and half ago.
