Hello all,
I would like to pass on my experience to Club Members so they also do not get "caught".
For some time now, in fact ever since the complete engine overhaul, I have experienced an unusual "buzzing" feel through the steering wheel and an additional annoying rattle best described as the noise made by a loose washer under a bolt, seemingly emanating from behind the instrument panel.
When the engine was done up, l also changed out as a matter of preventative maintenance all the high pressure flexible hydraulic hoses. The three brake hoses, the auto coolant hoses to the front, and the power steering hoses were all changed to brand new hoses with a full service life ahead of them. All were professionally done with the correct crimped end fittings, and they all look good and function well. In retrospect, I can say that the buzzing feel started about then also.
Anyway, after many consultations with fellow Rover Club of South Australia members (translate: buying them many beers....) I again visited the Power Steering hoses. The original old one from the pump (at the back of the generator) to the steering box came off the pump as a large diameter hose, went into a soft black foam thingy, and exited as a smaller diameter hose. This is the original one and as shown in the workshop manual. I had kept the old hoses (why?) and looking at this hose I found out that the foam "thingy" could be slid back and a double crimped metal joiner was revealed.
After a while it dawned upon me that it may be there for a reason.
After a long while thinking outside the square I was visited by what could be described as an epiphenomenonic thought - maybe the pump is too strong for the steering box, and the fluid pressure has to be restricted or the flow rate reduced. Indeed, this thing in the thingy was a restrictor valve.
I sourced a NOS hose which looked brand new and was still in its sealed packaging and had the sealing caps in both ends, and installed it and bled the power Steering system according to the WSM.
No more buzzing, and the "washer rattle" has disappeared. The steering feels the same (light and vague, as per normal) and the car is quieter as a result. Still can't hear the clock ticking, though.
I still have the old "original" hose, and I think I may try and salvage the middle section with the restrictor valve in it for future use, if I can dissasemble it without destroying it.
So, if anyone else is contemplating steering hose changeouts, please bear the above in mind.
Regards,
Geoff
