The interior lights and cigar lighter picks up from a bunch of bullets connectors stuffed high up inside the nearside A post. They are in direct line of a corroded inner wing and leaky screen seal. Corroded door switches and dirty lamp contacts do not help either the last two weeks i've been retrimming my dash in white as i left it black the last time i trimmed the whole car, all the electrics went back '' fine and working'' considering how sensitive they are on these cars, ( little tug on the connectors and joints and thats it " it dont work no-more" ). weird thing is the only thing that isn't working properly (intermittent) is the horn and i DIDN'T disconnect that.!! (must of disturbed the contact on the column ring when i was fighting to reconnect the trip counter)

Your work certainly looks pristine and very well done. The only consideration might be the amount of reflected glare when driving at certain times and particular directions during the day.

Its quite a 50s look, but then with the video screen it looks quite modern! Lots of work there, nice job! Would love to see more pictures as it progresses. Pop some details through to the modified editor and that could be a nice article for the club magazine! thats me by the way...

Thank you 'Roy of the rovers' and all the rest of you for the compliments on the dash,. this is the fourth one i've done and its not a difficult one to do, quite straight forward really, its not finished yet and going to make one or two changes before i'm satisfied with it. . the problem i have now is the colour, although the seats are mint they now dont match the white on the dash, basically the seats are *whiter" than the dash. (believe you me but white is the hardest colour to match) . so i have a propersition and do a good deal for someone,,! as the last time i trimmed it was 1977 i'm going to re-trim it entirely again, if anyone would like the old seat covers (seat covers only, NOT the seats or their foam padding) maybe we could do a deal, i dont want money just some spare parts exchange. also the headlining which is still oatmeal and in good nick i could remove it carefully and it will refit in another p5. infact we would have to exchange part for part on some items ie: rear shelf and door cards ABC post trims as the vynle would not refit properly (BTW its ambla not rexene) and then i would suggest you have a black carpet fitted, you buy it and i'll cut and bind them for you but you'll have to fit them youself. if you see the interior you will not decline this offer as everytime anyone sees it the first thing they say is " wow look at the inside !) anyhow, thats it in a nutshell. I don't like mine being in the steering cover as I am not left handed and will be moving mine as well. Did you make the cover for the hole ? What did you use to paint everything like the dash and steering wheel ? Cheers Colin

Hello Colin (gingerbeer) i didnt move the ignition key from steering column to dash as it was already in the dash panel. (mines a 69 model, i think 70 onwards has column start). the dash is trimmed in vynle (nautolex which is used mainly in the marine industry seating as its designed to resist salt water and easily hot-seams together whereas stitching seams allow water to get through.) the steering wheel, clock-bezels and two caps on the cowel are painted.. i used ordinary primer (not etching primer) halfords car spray paint 300ml can) and about a dozen coats of acrylic laquer (plasticoat) on the steering wheel. i've done others in the past and it does work and last.

if you're refering to the cover in the picture i thought it was a blanking plate (left or right hand drive lights and indicator levers) and is already there, so i'm sure its available if you know of anyone who's breaking a P5. but it would be easy to make one out of thin sheet metal,

Hi Mickm, Not accustomed to posts so I hope this reaches you. I am full of envy of your interior as in Australia leather does not fair well in the sun and the leather in my car is disintegrating. If you were interested I would be interested in buying your old leather if you had no takers as swapping parts would be too difficult from over here in the sun.
Regards Neil.

On my 71 rover that is where the ignition barrel etc is. My older 3lt that I had a few years ago had the key in the dash like your's. Cheers for the info Colin

Yes sure Neil, like i said i dont want money for it and rather do a fellow p5er a good turn, just pay the postage and they're yours ! I'm going to youtube the stripping and retrimming of them so you'll see exactly what they're like and i'm sure you wont be dissapointed. ( send you a link when its all done, probably in the next couple of months). Attachment Deleted

Why re-trim when you can recolour with materials from FurnitureClinic for just as good a result and much less trouble?

Mine is an early '70 build, with the ignition switch on the dash. I assumed that they were like that all the way to the end in '73. Is the column-mounted switch just a switch, or is it a steering lock too? Or did they just move it so it looked like it had a steering lock like other cars of the day?

They are a different switch Warwick where the Thief Proof Armoured cable outer is part of the switch, so it's not a simple job to move from column to dash due to the loom being different, and no there is no steering lock

Thanks John. I was aware of the thief-proof switch and its armoured cable, from reading the forum, but I had no idea that the switch was relocated to the steering column when it was introduced.

Sadly the car I have has failed paint and cheap lambswool seatcovers under which in large areas there is gaffer tape holding the foam together and no leather. The sun here can be extrordinarily cruel to paint and interiors but the plus is far less rust than over your side of the world. In fact we see P5's wrecked here that would be seen as excellent restores in the UK.

i've finished trimming the rear seat, lowered the seat squab considerably to get another inch and a half headroom and still maintain its comfort, been a challenge with loads of fettling. anyway here's some pics of the seat finished. Attachments:
