Hi I have broken my handbrake I was a little rough when releasing it and the push handle has come detached from the metal ratchet. How can I release the handbrake so I can drive the car to the garage ? Also could anybody please advise me where I can purchase the correct rear number plate .
Thanks Steve p5b xyw188

How can I release the handbrake so I can drive the car to the garage ? Firstly I'd make sure it was in PARK. Then I'd try unlocking the ratchet on the handle with a screwdriver or the like, and if not I'd remove the easiest to get to clevis pin from the linkage under the car. If your car is Bordeaux red I've seen it driving about, albeit a few years ago. Very nice it looked too.

If desperate cut the cable but I would knock out a clevis pin at one of the wheels. you may find it will move anyway

The ratchet is tucked out of the way a bit, all you can do is get a close a look as you can, and act on what you see. I recognised the registration, maybe I've got the car mixed up with another one with a similar reg.

You could unbolt one of the pully wheels under the bonnet that the cable runs over, which will release tension on the cable, or wind back the adjusters behind the wheels but that might not give you enough slack to release the shoes altogether.
