Hi started Coupe up today first time in around 10 days and got a machine gun sound which I presume is weak battery, however, battery is only 3 months old? Managed to start it but sounded and felt very weak. Took it for a spin for 15 mins or so but it was sluggish, spluttering and a couple of times would not want to go anywhere until I took my foot off throttle. Eventually got it home it conked out in my garage. Tried restarting but dead or machine gun sound. So I jump started it and it fired up straight away and sounded smoother than it ever did? Can you shed some light please? Many thx

Are you on an electric fuel pump?
Could you have a duff battery which meant the car was running but with barely enough juice to keep it going?
Hard to guess but by lifting off you used less fuel and maybe let the carbs fill up again...

Or battery is discharging due to current leakage...

A quick and easy way to test the condition of your battery, or its main connections, is to turn the headlights on before you try to start the car. If the battery and its connections are good, then the lights will dim slightly and the car will start. If the lights dim to the point of almost going out, the battery is either very low on charge, nearing the end of its life, or you have a bad connection somewhere in the main battery leads.
From what you say, it sounds like it may be the latter.

I agree with Warwick. Do you have a voltmeter. If so, check the battery voltage with the engine off : it should be something of the order of 12.5 volts or higher . Also , have you checked that you are getting charge when the engine is running ? The symptoms you have described are those of a battery which is down to something like 10.5 volts
