I purchased a couple of 'Moon' gauges a number of years ago with the notion of fitting one in the engine bay of my Rover so that I'd have more of a direct reference as to what the actual engine temperatures are. As my car is modified I don't use a standard top hose' but constructed a steel coolant pipe with short hose couplings at either end to connect to both the radiator and the engine thermostat outlet. This then made it easy to a fit temperature sensor switch and the Moon temperature gauge. As can be seen it registers the temperature of the coolant exiting the top thermostat. The ambient temperature today was 28C or 82F. The car sat idling for approximately a half hour in my driveway. The original Mk3 Rover temperature gauge sat stationary with the needle resting on the N position.
