It's time to start a new separate thread for my engine, now that things start moving. The old 6 (block and head) is in the shop where it was checked and some first measurements taken to assess the situation. I'm checking for availability of all spares needed, while waiting for a quotation for the labour (mainly the crankshaft and valves, plus general cleaning of all the parts). I took some photos :-) Attachments:

Happy to share! It's just the engine without the car but I'll do the best possible job. I have the distributor and the shaft with the bronze gear at the bottom, which needs to be replaced. I'll take a photo and post it later, is it the same gear for both the 6 IOE and the V8? Wadhams only offers one, and it's labelled "V8". Alternatively, I'm seriously considering the full electronic dizzy, Powerspark UK has a replacement at roughtly 70 GBP...?!

Anybody know if the bronze gear of the distributor is the same for both the 3 IOE and the V8 P5? It's the last spare I need to complete the list. It has 11 teeth.

Doubt it - there are few common parts. The LWB Land Rovers used the IOE 6 till 1980 so this may well be obtainable from those stockist of which there are many in the UK

Apparently johnwearingp4parts has the spare, although it goes under "Rover P4". We exchanged about ten emails and finally there's a match.

Has this already been mentioned?
While you have the engine where you can work on it, have you considered shaping the exhaust ports on the block to match the cast iron manifold? There is quite a difference between cylinders and a large mismatch that will impair gas flow. The gaskets do not line up well either.

Good news from JW the other day, the spare is the same (although with a microscopic difference in lenght but I measured with a cheap ruler so there's a tolerance), and I'll confirm the order tomorrow. As to the exaust ports, all the ports etc, everything wherever possible, will be cleaned/shaped/smoothed/improved to get the most out of it. This engine must pull once rebuilt, or I'll be the biggest dork around...! It's a jump in the dark, I have no idea of how the 3.0 feels and performs, and won't have until it'll be in the 109"... (on knees, praying for torque) Next week I guess I'll be able to order ALL the spares (I haven't listed them all, yet), and the fun part will begin... Attachments:

I can only speak for my 3 litre auto. Regarding torque, it is not a diesel. It will grumble along at 20 mph in top gear, but is more happy working hard at 2,000 rpm plus.

I got my spare distributor gear, but I may have another problem...I sent the order for all the other spares over to J Wadhams, and they asked me to confirm if the car is a MK2C or a MK3C, and what model year.
Problem is, I have no car, only the engine and its serial number. The workshop manual only says MK II.
Ideas?

Wadhams are very good about double checking that parts you order are corect for the year of car. However all you need to do is write "No car, only engine. Engine number: *********".

I did mention what car it came from somewhere along. Probably a Mk2c. The engine number will confirm this. There is no Mk3c, just a Mk3

They have my engine number already, I asked them to double-check everything first...I'd hate to have to return parts from Italy.
77005824C, the workshop manual I have is in the garage where the engine will be rebuilt, "3L Mk2" and I think that's all.

The C suffix means its the last engine development from March 64 on so there are quite a few things different and the high number points to one of the last Mk2c cars there could of course be some used on the early Mk3 especially manual ones as yours must be as the same engine was used on auto and manual Mk3 but different ones were necessary for Mk2 autos

Okay,
I just replied Wadhams and forwarded your words. Hopefully they can make sure I get the right spares. Waiting now for their feedback.
