I need to do a 'quick fix' to to tidy up the axle case on my car. I have a spare axle that will one day get proper attention and replace the existing one which is a rusty mess at the moment. I plan to attack it with a wire brush attachment on the angle grinder, brush on some Kurust or similar and then brush on some paint. In the old days it would be Hammerite smooth black but is there anything better out there that will last a couple of years ( and not drip into my hair while applying it )?

I just use hammerite.
Maybe not the best product nowdays but I used it on my rover and land rover.
Wire brush the old paint off, give it a coat of reoxide (screw fix do a reasonable one for not much money) then a couple of coats of hammerite smooth.
Not sure how close some one wants to look at my axle but are clean enough for me.

Thanks for the quick reply. I think I just want to fool the MOT man into thinking the car is cared for lol. He's the only one that will ever see it...

I've just finished mine. In the end I used Halfords black enamel paint over their matching primer. Its gloss so easy to wipe and goes on nice and thick. I really didnt worry too much about runs as its underneath and will be battered off in time anyway.
Hammerite sprays have become almost unusable I find. They are way too thin and weedy - the paint is better but still thin.
I have the radiator top panel that I sprayed with hammerite smoothrite 20 years ago and it was excellent back then - you'd have a job telling it wasn't powder coated. Nowadays you have to spray lots of coats and I find it often reacts with the surface.

I used good old fashioned Chassis Black Andy it was several years ago but it still looks the same! Removing he axle is not a difficult process it's just bl**dy awkward and heavy on your own
