Finished up replacing the strenthening gussetts between the engine tubes and the original crossmember as per originals. Bolted the frame back into the car to check the fit. As you can see the shock turrets fit exactly the same as original, the only difference is they are slightly different shape, spot on ! Going to fit the rack next to see how the steering shaft is going to be routed. Woz

Looking very nice! I agree with Vince that your welds are far above average. I am interested to see how the steering items will be fitted.

Not much going on at the moment just waiting for the steering shaft and uj's to arrive, just a couple of pics showing one side assembled and rack in place.

Stripped out and dismantled the steering column ready for the modification. Cut the old column to the right length and turned it down to match the new shaft. Machined out the centre so the new splined shaft was an interference fit, this was then crossed drilled and threaded for strength. This will be cross bolted, the shafts will be tig'd togethet and the crossbolt welded and machined smooth.

Machined up a new brass bush and sleeve to take the new intermediate shaft which attatches to the new rack via a uj. Heres a pic of it on the shaft. the outer sleeve will be welded to the subframe once everything is assembled

Wozza would Bronze not have been a better choice? Brass is too soft!

Wozza would Bronze not have been a better choice? Brass is too soft! Yes John if it was under great stress then i would definitely have used bronze but this is just to keep the shaft true and it's under no stress or strain so I'm happy that the brass will last but as with anything I do only time will tell.

Here's a little something to keep you motivated Wozza. I don't think it's powered by a Rover V8 either...just a little too much mumbo...and it certain puts the "Bull" back in British Bulldog! PS. Nice set of exhaust manifolds too...if you're the creative type.

Extremely jealous I don’t have the skills to do this mod, neither the money but fascinated how the car turns out. Keep up the good work

Just back from powder coating. Sandblasted, Zinc rich primed then gloss black all ready to install, need to get some shutz work done first before it can be re-fitted. Woz

The subframe looks great Wozza. It will certainly be very rigid and strong with the additional cross member. Glad the steering worked out too.
Just for interest sakes...how did you ensure the acherman steering geometry was correct with the rack and pinion steering? Did you also consider bump steer in relation to the rack pivots and the lower suspension arm pivots?
I note that you've got the steering column passing through one of the engine mount tubes. As the subframe is mounted to the body via rubber isolation mounts there's generally some relative movement between the 2 structures (body & subframe). There's even a Factory OEM loop in the brake line between these 2 structures to allow for some relative movement.
Although I have a full set of new subframe mounts (club reproduction in OZ) I elected to remove the old isolation mounts and weld them solid after removing the aged and fatigued isolation rubber in between. This modification has not dimished the ride quality at all (in my view) but did remove the relative movement between the two members for improved handling and ride.
I believe in your case it would also remove any stress on the steering shaft where it passes through that engine support tube as it appears to be a rigid fixture.

thanks Vince. Regards the front end, all of that is sorted out on the bench. The angles are set up on the front end jig and all bump steer is dialled out, the chassis was set up level and the subframe was welded in level which according to Wayne who built it, is all I needed to do to retain all the angles which in the case of my minor that Wayne built as well works like a dream. As regards to the chassis / body and steering only time will tell as this is something that I have not thought about although the original box and steering set up must have similar problems if there are any?

Had a really good weekend on the p5, got the chassis and custom wishbones all bolted up on Saturday. Today I managed to get the new wilwood discs and calipers fitted, bolted on the old wheels and sat the old girl on the ground for the first time in about 3 months.

Looks great Wozza. Fantastic effort. PS. As an aside what type of paint are you using? Many thanks for your constant enthusiasm Vince. Chassis and suspension components are all powder coated, the body colour is straight cellulose and the black underbody is schutz stone chip, quite heavy textured and slightly rubberized to prevent chipping.

Looking good. Did you have to change/modify the exhaust manifold because of the "new" steering shaft? Keep up the good work!
