Sounds like an exciting day out Oz! Glad you made it home...the Rover P5 guardian angels were obviously looking over your shoulder. More Horsepower than you could poke a stick at....my 15 year old daughter felt very special in the back of the P5 after seeing a similar wood lined interior in an old Rolls. P5 Guardian Angels gave me a kick in the pants for being a smart ass..

Been making a new centre console to fit the stereo and new Cigarette lighter and USB charger, I'm also looking at a couple of cup holders. The reality of life is that we need to be able to charge phones, GPS's and other devices. I'm not fussed about a radio but the wiring is there and someone has already cut holes on the parcel shelf. The intent is to make it look like it should be there. (I may make a small unit to fit between the seats for the cup holders rather than putting them in the console, it's a pain having water bottles rolling around the parcel shelf or floor.)

Interesting add on. Where are they sourced and what are you going to use to drop the voltage to 5v for the USB connector?

ozriderp, i admire what you are trying to do, i too think its important to have some up-to-date entertainment and gadjets! I'm not familiar with the MK1 and not even sure if its front bench or split seats, or even if its floor or column gear change, but i've done some mods on this criteria for a couple of people all P5b though and i think it works rather well. So keep at it and enjoy the result. Attachment Deleted

enigmas, these devises all come with a built-in voltage regulator to drop the voltage on the USB side only, the cigar side is left direct, they are quite cheap as well.

Must say I find the idea of fitting the radio into the centre console quite intriguing, particularly if it was possible to introduce some type of cover that could hide the radio (really thinking of a chrome cover there)! In my car, the cigar lighter was replaced with a manual choke, then there's only the knobs for the rear screen heater and the fog lights. I do think these could be placed on the left and right of the radio. I wonder as to whether you can still keep the tool box tray above the console though - none of the pictures really show that. And is the part in which you guys fitted the radio a separate part or is it connected to the tray that hosts the gear selector, i.e. is this one or two pieces? If I do this I'd sure like to make this reversible. velvet : may I ask exactly what the two round holes in front of the gear selector are for? Cheers, Olaf

Olaf, the radio or player won't sit in the console comfortably unless you make some modifications and cut-outs, the angle bracket (where the switches and lighter are) is 57mm tall and it needs to be 62mm for everything to fit comfortable, plus that bracket needs to be at 90 degrees where originally it sits at 105 degrees. These pictures will give you a rough idea of what you have to do and of course the console will have to be removed from the car and diss-assembled to do this. So if you fancy doing it then make a new bracket out of thin gauge sheet metal and keep the old one for reversal. If you need some vynle or leather pieces to cover the new bracket let me know as i have plenty of scrap bits large enough to do the bits you need free of charge. (any colour) .

Hi Harvey, particularly if it was possible to introduce some type of cover that could hide the radio You could fit a radio behind an original wood centre glovebox door. yes, I know, but thanks for the hint anyhow! I actually do have a complete set of wooden dash parts here (minus a few trifles), but I haven't gotten round to deal with them. I'm also a bit worried concerning a colour mismatch with the other wooden parts on the doors. I must also admit that I actually quite like the radio- + speaker-console that my car originally came with. Maybe this is about too many options and too little time, too. Cheers, Olaf

Where exactly are you located (I suggest to PM me instead of posting any address here in the thread!)? We'll be doing quite a bit of traveling through England, with a bit of time for a little detour here and there, so if the detours don't get all too large, I'd love to stop by at your place for a see-and-chat-and buy you a beer (or whatever else) in your fav pub, if you like! Cheers, Olaf

Considering a console like the early Jags, I'll fit the radio and accessories at the front and cup holders etc between the seats.

Made a new centre section today, WIP but the main bit is done.Looks pretty good, in my opinion and that's the only one that counts anyway . I've left enough room either side of the lighter and USB chargers for a couple of toggle switches for lights, thermo fan etc..

First dryish day we've had for a while so I took the opportunity to drop the suspension back down.
Refitted the lowering blocks at the back and wound the torsion bars down at the front.
Very little difference in ride but it has made a huge difference in body roll.
Found some paint bubbling in the rear drivers side door so ground it all down, there's been a previous rust repair done at some time in the past. Treated it all with rust convertor inside and out and then sealed it with rust convertor / primer.
I'll rebog it tomorrow and paint it to seal it all from the weather.
It will get cut out when the body is eventually done.

Pulled the fuel sender unit out today and tested, basically it is stuffed.
What is the recommendation for a replacement?
1. Are they available? 2. Can they be refurbished? 3. Is there anything compatible? e.g. Landrover etc.
Edit: Wadhams has them for $88 (52 Pound).

In what way is it stuffed? if the resistance wire is broken or the wiper yes it will be! if not a good soak in something like WD40 and a "light" clean of the wire and wiper with a small brass brush may help? don't go at it with abrasive paper.

It's been removed, taken apart and cleaned, there is no connection between the pickup connector and the internals.

A few sites are showing Landrover 90560612 as an alternative, cheap fix if it works. For Series 1 and 2 Landrovers their saying to bend the float wire the opposite way so it reads correctly. I'll check it out when it arrives for the Mk1.

Two things, no make that three things happen to float senders: 1) the nichrome wire oxidises and not longer makes electrical contact with the wiper 2) the wiper becomes fatiguied and does not press on the nichrome wire 3) the contact between the micrhome wire and the externa, connection becomes defective through oxidation (or physical breakage).
So try gently painting the nichrome with pure diluted phosphoric acid and then working the wiper a little to imrove contact.
