Hello all, my 68 P5b has regular service and is fitted with a manual chock and electronic ignition. She always starts with the first swing of the starter, until last week. I am now having to engage the starter for quite a long time as each plug tries to fire. I fitted new HT leads about two years ago and the battery is fairly new. I thought that I may have a problem with my coil or ballast resister.
Any thoughts welcome.

Having now finished trawling through all the relevant threads on "poor starting" one thing is of concern. When "Eluminition" ignition is fitted should I have replaced (changed for 12v) the coil and removed the ballast resisted. Just a thought.

I presume you have some mechanical and electrical knowledge? If the Lumenition system has worked faultlessly for several years why would you want to start fiddling with it. If it were wrongly installed initially it would play up within a half hour or so and continue to do so until it burnt out.
Two issues will affect starting and running. Fuel and Spark. Do you know how to check to see that both are being supplied?

Thanks John, that a good point about the electronic ignition. I have an electric fuel pump which delivers a great fuel supply. This morning I will check out the float chambers and main jet also it may be prudent to replace my plugs. Then try again.

I have found the reason why my P5b is having difficulty starting. I am not getting full choke due to the outer sleeve at the pull handle end coming adrift. My next problem is that JRW is out of stock is there anywhere else that stocks long cables?

These are not impossible to repair. I forget for a minute whether it is a solid cable or a Bowden cable. The latter can be found on eBay or in a bicycle shop, the former from a model aeroplane shop.
