Hi all, just getting back to my Rover projects. V8 saloon resto got put on hold when a relationship started, hmm. then ended, whew! bought a complete original 68 saloon that had had a lot of mechanical work done, good paint and fabulous interior. So that's the weekend car sorted.
So I've been a bit sidetracked these last few years but after attending that amazing auction in November last year and having met some great people and the general friendliness there, reminded me of the dedication people have to these cars. As I live in Canberra the auction was just a drive on the way home from work. I'd always know about this collection of Rovers having driven past it many times. but that was all I knew. So I dropped in after work on the Friday and witnessed some amazing examples of original and part restored models going under the hammer. 140 cars all runners!.There was fierce bidding on the good stuff but the unfinished and potential projects were going for beer money. Quite a few V8 and 3L saloons, going for around $500 -$1500, some with new paint jobs, but as I already have a V8 I kept my cool, it was sad though to see these old girls go up before the hammer with the auctioneer starting the bid off at $50 ! So, caught up in the moment, I decided to get in on the action as I spied a Mk2 3L Coupe lining up outside the hall. no bids, then the bloke who drove it in put his hand up, must be special if he's going for it I thought, so I went for it and got it for $200.
I'm still amazed, 1963 Juniper green, 98,000 miles, power steering, auto, it starts instantly and idles so smooth, everything works. A bunch of new parts in the boot too, body work need some help though, not sure what or when I plan to do anything to it, it smells of old leather and dust, with the sort of charm that only a 3L has, it even has a look of gangster about it, which my teenage kids think is pretty cool.
The parts auction the next day was just as amazing, i wont go into too much but a whole pallet of seats for ten bucks?! I managed to get complete seats front and back for my V8 resto which is a huge boost.
happy spannering
