Are you sure it's the Alternator Terry? it may be the 4TR? 3AW? There are a few recon ones on Fleabay just make sure you get the correct handed one!

You could consider to buy a Lucas A127 which has a "in house" rectifier and regulator so you can remove the 4TR and the 3AW. When you buy this, then you are sure it will work and you don't need to find out if it is the alternator, 4TR or 3AW which is faulty. Make sure you buy a LH one because it is fitted to the left side of the engine. Mechanically it fits without modifications. Electrically it is very easy. I can help you with that as i did this conversion to my daily. This also charges better at low revs, i believe Peter

Make sure you buy a LH one because it is fitted to the left side of the engine. LH and RH is nothing to do with which side of the engine it fits to, in fact on the P5B it fits to the RHS of the engine but is a LH alternator. You can change it anyway, although if buying new that's not ideal.

Hi Harvey,
I know you can modify it to fit but the alternator mounting has a thread where it meets the adjuster bracket and the hole where it is attached to the engine mounting bracket isn't threaded so its more convenient to buy the right one

Check all the connections and plugs thoroughly and make sure the Field actuating relay 6RA clicks when the ignition is switched on and is supplying juice.
The brushes also stick and wear - usually one wears more than the other and swapping them round can often sort it till new ones can be bought

The main cable with the large Lucar will be OK provided it is in PVC not the cloth braided stuff. (Brown/White)
The smaller cable goes to the Ind or WL terminal. Disconnect the plug at the round 3AW canister and bridge the 2 coloured cables (Brown/White & Brown/Green together with a jump cable or just remove from the plug and join together and insulate. Make sure you do not connect to the black earth wire in the plug!
Disconnect the 4TR plug. Tie up or cut-off the old Field cables at the alternator end (they will not be live).
If you have to replace the main alternator cable it terminates under the dashboard in a Busbar affair with all the rest of the main battery wiring and ammeter shunt.

Yes it is but I really must refer you to the wiring diagram - it's not a complicated circuit but I am not prepared to risk misleading you. Coloured clear Pdf's of the diagram are available free to members - well worth the subscription. The WSM and handbook has the original which although not very large is OK for this purpose
