The trouble with late night mechanics on the drive is eventually you will end up dropping something and never find it.
After removing the air filter unit (which must surely be spares from a English Electric Lightning jet!!) I lost the rear wingnut down the back of the engine into the vortex that swallows such things and no end of searching will bring it back.
After 40 mins searching old tool boxes comparing nuts that will fit, I gave up!
So please kind people do you know the thread size so I can get a replacement?
Btw changing the air filter turned into a 35 minute job trying all sorts of means to squash the swine in and worse fit it into the shell afterwards. Fortunately cunning use of wooden blocks and adjustable furniture vice did the trick.
Sorry I never qualified which nut, the small ones that hold the air filter element to the body and the one that hold the whole unit to the top of the block? Thank you

1/4 UNC according to the parts manual. This is the wing nut that fixes the rear elbow to the long stud sticking out of the back of the air box. It's a wing nut on Mk1 and a hexagon nut on Mk1a, Mk2 and Mk3.

Would you know about the bigger nut or wingnut under the unit that locks it down onto the engine block? Mines also missing?

I think the battery clamp wing nuts are the same. Perhaps you could 'borrow' one of those to to keep the car mobile? The larger nut is 5/16 UNF according to the book...

You'd be better going to an engineering supplier for the wing nuts. Or look out for an auto jumble at the weekend. Not sure where you are but there will be several stalls selling UNC and UNF fasteners at Huddersfield auto jumble this coming Sunday. Or Ebay if you can wait a few days, I just had a quick look and saw a pack of 5 X 1/4 UNC wing nuts for £2.35 with free P&P.
