Tonight I drained and flushed out the water system. See for yourself? 5 buckets of this before it ran clear. Rear squashed heater pipe replaced and routed properly. New thermostat fitted. The old thermostat I might take to The Antiques Road Show and claim its ancient Egyptian heritage long lost in the sands of time or say its from the Red Sea! It all went quite well no dramas , ran the engine carefully for a minute then switched off , topped up the water and repeated a few times. Letting it settle overnight and check again tomorrow. Other than losing the wingnut off the back of the airfilter it was a refreshingly easy task, well done Rover for making over engineered well made parts!

Stan, You paid the $400 to have photophuckit host your pictures here? Or has their policy changed?

According to photobucket T&C, you only get to use them for third party hosting if you pay $399. Expect your links to disappear as they cotton on.

BTW, I strongly recommend using full strenght corrosion inhibitor (1 bottle does 15 litres). Use the whole bottle and drain and repeat at least every 6m.
The brown you see in your bucket is only the tip of the rust-berg.

This car has been stood a long time I think and only infrequent use, personally I like to use them as much as possible, its all nice to wax and polish old cars up but if they don't get used they will start to rot and suffer other issues. The poor thing has a shock with me, its a daily driver now no sitting in warm garages here. It was designed for a purpose and its getting used. Now I am getting used to its erm interesting steering I enjoy it more and more, its got a nice turn of speed too. I know after a few weeks of fettling it will settle down and I can hopefully enjoy it even more. Hopefully this flush will get that heater working finally and lets hope the new thermostat will help too?

Whats wrong with the steering? It should be tight and precise, with good straight line stability at speed.

After driving a MX5 to get into a cruiseliner with super light steering on baloon soft tyres , its a bit of a culture shock. I have to feed the wheel into corners so it does not scratch the door handles on the tarmac 😂

Stan, Here's the text of an old post of mine on the subject. Once you've finished all the flushing and you're ready to connect up the radiator, cut the foot off a pair of pantyhose and push it inside the top radiator inlet, then fold the "cuff" back over the inlet tube. Refit the top hose. Be prepared to have a little bit of coolant leakage past the hose clip as it will tend to seep through the pantyhose. Remove it again after several weeks of use and you'll be surprised by what you catch in it. Keep checking it until it no longer collects any crud.
When the final coolant fill is done, discard the pantyhose. This isn't a permanent filtration solution as it stops the radiator hose from sealing properly on the radiator inlet, and it probably isn't very durable, long-term.Read more: roverp5.proboards.com/thread/9464/3-litre-radiator#ixzz4zJocRqhW

Hmm where did you get that idea? Its like builders using baby oil to cleanup stainless steel fittings! Thanks for the tip btw. Looking at its past history it was sat around a lot and this is probably its first daily stink at working for its keep so I intend to flush it out quite a few times over the next 6 months or so. I do think I still have some air trapped though, get gurgling once in a while? I check the water level but its staying constant. Probably the heater matrix?

Stan simply loosen the top heater hose to bleed out any air trapped within the heater core whilst the engine is running...obviously with the heater on.

Nylon panties eh Warwick? Hmm where did you get that idea? ... Pantyhose, Stan. Pantyhose. Not panties. We used to use stockings but no-one wears them anymore. (Well, I don't)
