im thinking of changing my p5b tyres . im looking for a set with the inch whitewall band. Also looking for the larger tyre that ive seen on some p5bs at shows as they seem to fill the arches out better. Firstly what is the max size you can go to without any rubbing issues on full lock. Does it affect the rotation --does it affect the speedo rating . Any info would be greatfully received . also any pics please if poss. Thanks in advance paul

Mine has 225 x 75 x15 which were on when I bought it in 1991 !,
They have big whitewalls and I love the look but I will scrap them due to age and return to standard size before it finally gets back on the road. Although they don't rub, the near side wheel bearings were shot and all the bushes worn out. A friend drove the car who has driven a few p5's and he told me mine was the worst he,d driven in terms of ride and handling!,
I hope that after all the things I've fixed and renewed it'll be far nicer to drive when I eventually do manage to get it back on the road!!

Hi Paul, I have 205/70's on my 1968 coupe. I've not experienced any problems. The sidewall height is lower than the original cross-plies, but personally I think these are the best compromise of modern tyre size for the P5. But everyone has their own opinion on that!

Any tyre over a '195' is really too big for 5" rims. Quite a few tyre retailers/fitters (where I live) will not mount a tyre more than a 195 to the standard 5" rims for legal reasons. The second number is the 'aspect ratio' (width in relation to tyre height). The higher the aspect ratio number the taller the tyre and vica versa. A 225/65r15 (a wide low profile tyre) would be a very 'squirmy' tyre (lots of side wall flex) to use on a standard P5 5" rim. My coupe is currently wearing 185/80r15s. (Front) and 225/60r15" on 6 1/2" rims on the rear.

Like Enigmas, I have 185/80R15s. On both P3 and P4.
Last time I checked, Hankook were no longer importing these into Australia. Do you have a secret source, or are your tyres more than 4y old?
I currently am running on Maxxis instead, but I heard they also stopped bringing these to Australia.

Hankook tyres are still available in Europe so a large tyre company told me, not available here as the failed the noise level test which I thought was instigated by the EU?

The experts suggest that a tyre has a shelf life of only 6 years as the rubber deteriorates faster when the tyre is not used. If it is on the car they reckon 10 years. Perhaps the club could look into having a batch made if there was sufficient demand I had a rear tyre loose pressure a few years ago due to a faulty valve, she was totally uncontrolable. I am hoping to fit tyre pressure monitors when the new Michelin kit is released.

205's, good make ones (XJ6 used them so were common) and not worn, were on a P5B saloon I bought in 1995 - I never liked the way it handled compared to our other P5B saloon on 185's. It just did not seem to feel as if was holding the road and the understeer round corners at speed was more. It was far from confidence inspiring but I suspected the sagging/knocking rear springs
As the 185 shod saloon was off the road when we went to Ireland in 1996 I fitted the wheels etc off our other P5B and it rode and handled far better on the slightly narrower 185's. The Irish roads pre EU grants were almost as bad as ours are now and they really rattled the back springs and bottomed them sometimes. They held up though for another 2 years.
When back in the UK I refitted the 205 shod wheels but shortly after one blew out at 70 mph on the A42. No hassle apart from the heavy and fast traffic but as that tyre was ruined I changed the whole set to 185 Kumo's which once again restored the handling

After some research on the internet I have been able to purchase a set of 4 tyres from Oponio www.oponeo.co.uk/tyre-finder/t=1/car/r=1/185-80-r15They are Veredestein in the correct size of 185/80 R15. The date of manufacture is February 2017. The Federals that I bought through the club have done about 20000 miles, but one of them has developed a buldge in the tread. The Veredesteins are more expensive at £125 each.

I have fitted Vedersteins on my P6B from that company - very pleased with them. Plan to fit my P5B with them too and the size you suggest.

I have 235/75/15 whitewalls fitted to my saloon, and have had since the 80's, never had problems, but cant see you fitting any larger, i originally put Avon turbo speeds, which i like very much, but find now they are very expensive, so now American 235's 1" white walls.

I think 185s are more suitable than 205s and closer to OEM width. Wider tyres do not necessarily make for better handling and comfort

We have had this a few times now 235's may be unsafe on standard rims? best ask your insurance company
