This may be a long shot but has anyone experienced premature pitting on the chrome light surrounds from JR Wadhams please?
The reason I ask is that I bought new light surrounds for both sides (aswell as loads of other stuff) fro JRW around 4yrs ago & fitted them to my Coupe.
The car only comes out dry days, Is always garaged when not in use, kept well polished & also covered over with a top quality indoor car cover.
I notice pitting on the top of the N/S rear light surround a few weeks back. I took photographs & emailed JRW & had a reply back from Jon to say that in his opinion, something has got onto the surround & caused it to pit. He said that they could not be guaranteed indefinitely (completely agree with that)but it should re-chrome very well!
Nothing has ever gone onto the chrome to contaminate it so hence the question if anyone has experienced this kit of pitting after a small number of years please?
Thanks in advance, Mike

Hi Mike pitting is usually caused by something under the chrome, some form of chemical reaction? I had my original ones done 15 years ago and they are still ok!

Its finding someone who is willing to do the job properly a good thickness of copper plating to eliminate the defects! this is a problem to them as it's time consuming plating and polishing the copper before they chrome plate.

Unfortunately it could be the indoor car cover, how is the humidity in your garage ? When I had a Triumph Stag re-painted some years ago the owner of the garage said never use a car cover. From time to time cars would be brought in with micro blistering on the roof - caused by a car cover. The thicker the cover the more likelehood of trapping moisture and where the cover touches the car that is where the problems will happen.

I have one on my MG for over 10 years and no paint or other problems. My cover has a rather soft inside and it can breath. Peter

I have a set of JRW and they developed some pin pricks within a year or so.
The car had been out side during a wet few weeks to allow my garage to be used for another car I was working on.
I didn't realise that chrome was porous so never thought to apply wax to the chrome but others have said this is something I could have done to help.Going by the weight of them I though they were a cast brass type alloy and top quality plater would sort them out.
They are still a much better than the originals.

Chrome is only Porous if it is very thin I forget how may Microns/Thou it should be? treat it like the bodywork with a good wax

Mine did exactly the same - in my case they had not only been waxed and sealed with a modern paint sealant but also car is off road in garage with a cover.
As you say, they are better than the originals but I was disappointed. I haven't reported this but assume it's just the quality of base metal and plating we all get nowadays.

Thank you all very much for your replies.
It is a very high quality car cover, extremely soft on the inside & I never leave it on all year round, only during the winter months & even then, on dry days, the car comes out of the garage to 'breath' with the cover off.
As I said I don't use the car on wet days & I've always made sure it is waxed/polished/sealed.
The garage doesn't suffer with damp or condensation.
I think I'm just a bit disappointed how long the JRW one lasted when you consider the price. The O/S is still perfect! (I purchased a pair from JRW at the same time).
JRW appear to have no real interest in that it could be a manufacture fault so that's a waste of time.
My options are to have it replated, which I would imagine is going to be around the same price as another new one from JRW or just buy another one from JRW & hope for the best.

The light surround from Wadhams is an astonishing price I agree.
I've just had a reply back from S&T Electroplate in Yate (Bristol).
I sent them an enquiry asking about a rough price to do the light surround (not the reflector housing) & also asked about the cost of plating the O/S front bumper blade (purely because it has some light scuff marks on it due to storage) The blade is part of a bundle of re-chromed items I purchased a few years ago. I sent them photos & I did say that I could appreciate they couldn't give me an exact price but could they provide a guide price.
They came back with a guide price of £200-£250 plus the dreaded VAT. They have also warned that this is a starting price & depends on the metal & any repairs needed.
I did see on their website that the minimum order is £60 plus VAT & I certainly didn't expect it to be cheap anyway but all of a sudden, the £92.00 surround from Wadhams is not as bad as it first seemed!!

Try MGBD Parts. They specialise in P6 but have a rechroming firm they use who do an excellent job, including with Misak items. The plating is three layers, copper, nickel and chrome. Mark is not registered for VAT. P6 bumpers are £230, overriders £50 each and doorhandles (Mizak) £35 each.

...The plating is three layers, copper, nickel and chrome. ... The only way to do it properly.

Thank you all very much for your replies & details/suggestions of companies.
I'll give them a call & have a chat to see what they say.
I'm not looking to get the job done cheap, just a good job for a fair price.
