Evening all just thought I would post that I have just taxed my Rover under the new rules regarding the MOT. I did it online and despite having no current MOT on my car (it expired on 21st April) I have now re taxed it for 12 months

I am so glad you posted this since my MOT expires tomorrow however the exhaust manifold is off so unable to drive it of course.
I understand they tightened up the rules now about driving to and from MOT especially if a car has a fail thats dangerous etc but I digress, in spite of numerous articles explaining the change its not entirely very clear not even from DVLA what to do? Mine is tax free anyway being on historic tax so technically I only need to fill out that exemption form (v112) when its time to retax (which of course is zero).
Presume you did all that online as you say and didnt have to print off and go to the post office as it implies on their site?
Personally I do think its a stupid idea MOT exemptions and yes probably 80 % of classic owners will look after their cars and be safe but how many dealers wont just to flog classics off with a shiny paint finish and tin plate on the floor!

I would imagine that if you go online the site will guide you through the process. My brother went online to re tax his old Renault 10, without MOT and it only took a couple of minutes. But, even though your car does not need an MOT if you take it for a 'peace of mind' MOT and it fails you cannot use it until it passes ! Bizzare !

What I am going to do in future is have a competent garage annually check the car over mechanically, especially brakes, steering and suspension, and for soundness of body and give me a chit to say that it is up to scratch. Keep on file in lieu of an MOT.

I took mine for an MOT,I took it a bit before the old one expired even though its now exempt. It passed and the tester reported that its brakes on the rollers performed better than most modern cars. I have also taxed my transit even though its MOT has expired and its currently a non runner. The emphasis is on the owner to keep his car in a roadworthy condition and if it isn't and he's pulled over he'll still get 'done' MOT or not. What I worry is that some rotten old wreck that shouldn't be on the road will wipe out half a bus queue one day and as a result the government, with assistance from the anti car lobby will legislate all 'old bangers' off the road.

all 'old bangers' off the road. I think you could be right, that's probably the long term plan! problem, reaction, solution.

Bit of info regarding the new rules here. www.gov.uk/government/news/mot-changes-20-may-2018Interesting to note on the bottom of the page you can opt in to recieve a text message reminder for your MOT due date, not sure if they offer the same service for TAX reminders, but since the disc has been abolished I notice far more cars being clamped for no tax ( including our daily! ) if you have staggered mot and tax due dates it is far too easy to forget to tax especially if you don't get a reminder in the post ( we have not had a posted reminder for the last three years ). Big money for the clamp and store company's .......

My garage sends me a text before the MoT expires.
I don't think the same applies to road fund licence because you require a valid reference number which is on the paper form they send a few weeks before RFL expires. Incidentally you can tax your car twice accidentally and DVLA wont make a refund because their system allows others who might have purchased your car during the month to pay (but they told me they are working on it)! Owners both lose the RFL paid in a month where the sale was made - called a double whammy or cash cow.

The testing station I use now also send a text as a reminder (will come in more handy as my memory gets worse) I put my P38 range rover in,still passed with no advisories under the new rules. Most of the changes seem common sense to me.
