Traveling home from a great day at the Bath festival of motoring I noticed that my amp meter was swinging between +30 to -30 and there was a clicking sound from behind the dash area. I have a 1968 P5b. Although a charge would be sustained if I was able to keep the amp at below +30. The clicking sound is coming from the Alt control unit. The red charge light goes off as usual. Could it just be the control unit or the main alt?

In addition to my last. The ignition warning light comes on and goes out when started. I am thinking of just fitting a Lucas replacement the question is what wiring if any need modifying?

May well be the warning light can next to the control unit in the engine compartment - or bad connections. The system is quite reliable but simple wiring mods are required if you fit a modern type. You do have to know what you are doing though with either system. Plenty on SEARCH.
Refer to the WSM for actual testing

The ammeter swinging from full scale to fullscale is dangerous. You should believe the ammeter, disconnect the battery and not connect it again until you have found the problem.
A reasonable explanation for your obervations is an intermittent short circuit. None of the cabling in a P5B except the line from the battery to starter solenoid is desgned for a sustained current of more than 30A. A fire may result from failure to fix this.
