I am renovating my 1973 P5B Coupe and planning to fit a new loom I contacted Autosparks. They list three versions for the P5 and they are all of mixed covering, cloth and PVC. Mine is original but all PVC. Autosparks on enquiry said they were not aware any P5 had all PVC looms. My car is one of the last, built in July 73. Ray has a 73 with PVC too. So question is when did the change to all PVC occur?

Mine was built in 71, registered in 72. I'm pretty sure loom is original and it's all pvc as far as I have seen!!

I assume you're talking about the individual wire insulation, in which case a 1973 car would have still used a mixture of PVC-covered wires and cloth-covered wires. Generally the cloth covering was used on the 'supply side' of the fuse, with PVC on the 'demand side'. My 1968 cars original loom was like this, and a NOS loom for a 1970's car was the same. I've no idea why Rover did this, as it would add cost and complication to the loom, but it seemed to be the norm. Perhaps the additional cloth covering adds an extra safety-factor against damage and chafing on the unfused wires.
As for the loom wrapping (in which groups of wires are wrapped to form the loom), that was always PVC as far as I know.

Full PVC looms were used from late 71 on for the mods when the thief-proof coil mod was fitted - there may have been X overs through supply shortages caused by industrial action at BLMC and its third party supplier eg Rists for looms. Spares stocks may have been used and modified.
P5B's were well past their sell-by date by the early 70's and should have long been terminated but there was just no alternative vehicle that suited the few remaining wealthy customers incl. HMG

My car was built in February 1971 and has a thief proof coil. All the wires that go into the fuse box are cloth covered and those that come out are PVC. I had never noticed that before !

Hmmm..! Rather a mixed situation. An independent contact suggested that as mine was built only 11 days from the end that perhaps they had run out of cloth covered wire.

Yes, that could be the case. My 1968 car looked the same as John's photo, and the NOS loom for an early 70's model that I bought was basically the same. I didn't know the last cars with the thief-proof coil used all-PVC as Phil says, but probably by this time the combination of the P5B being so old and staff morale dropping meant things were changing at the factory. You could view fitting a mixed cloth / PVC loom as taking the car back to original spec :-)

Ray has sent me photos of the wiring in his 1973 P5B Coupe and it is definitely all PVC, exactly the same as mine. He has no reason to think, like me, that it is not original.

hi mines a 69 canvas around the dash all other parts pvc just done mine which a got from autoparts not exactly right took a time but done it
