Exciting stuff, I love refitting a freshly painted car like that, cleaning everything before it goes back on....very satisfying

I’m having a horrible day, descaling the crank pulley & radiator mounts ready for painting.........do you know when you wish you’d never started something?

I’ve managed to get most of the engine built up but can go no further at the moment as I’m still stuck for a piston, possibly even 2 This is piston no1 This is piston no 6 No 6 would probably go again but if I can get a couple of good ones I’d rather replace it

My attention turned to cylinder heads this weekend, so I stripped my pair of donated efi heads which were actually 3.5 carb Range Rover ones, not that it put me off. On closer inspection it was clear they had spent some time at the bottom of the pit pond & would need a full set of valves & guides & a skim. So I contacted someone else who told me he had a pair of 3.9 heads & he came up trumps, I now gave my sticky little hands on them & it turns out they are actually late type 10 bolt heads from a 4.0/4.6 They need a bit of a clean up as they have seen a bit of rain, but they seem to be in very good fettle, in fact I scotchbrited one this afternoon & it’s like new. The gasket faces look almost good enough to be able to plonk them straight on......obviously they will be checked & skimmed if required & I can’t fit them until I get my 2 pistons back in any way

Might get another pair of gaskets just to be on the safe side as these have copper rings around the outer set of bolt holes not needed on these heads, just in case they don’t seal properly

Took my P5B for a 5 mile drive to exercise her legs and the Rolls too afterwards.

Check the cyl head volumes if the heads are off a larger displacement engine.

My old boy, Winston, being refitted after a much needed colour change from Burnt Grey to a very dark Navy. Not an original Rover colour, but it’s a flat, non metallic, so I think it’s a period enough look.
The car is in Melbourne Australia, and I currently live in Taiwan, so I’ve had to put a lot of faith in my panel shop!
The plan is to move the car to Portland, Oregon next year, where I’m sure he will cut quite a dash...

A dark colour always makes the chrome stand out better, be nice to see some finished pics

More sanding & descaling today, I’m sick of the sight of brackets & pulleys, hopefully I’ll get them all painted tomorrow along with the sump , then after that there’s just the rocker covers & inlet to do...........and to think I used to enjoy doing this

Drained gearbox oil off. Just over 4 litres came out in to my 5 ltr jug. Dropped the gearbox sump pan off and cleaned everything up, repainted the sump pan outer casing, fitted the new heavy duty Classeparts gasket and refitted the sump pan and added 4 fresh litres of Castrol TQF.
Ran the car up to running temp and shifted through all gears many times. All seemed well and will do a cold check in the morning to see if i need to top up or not. New gearbox sump pan gasket seems to be holding well so happy there i am.

New gearbox sump pan gasket seems to be holding well so happy there i am. Checking when cold gives a misleading result. When I first had my car the gearbox leaked and I went to the Borg Warner workshop in Southampton ( if my memory is correct) and the chap said the way to check the level is after a good run when the box is hot, park on the level, put in park, turn off the engine and check the fluid at once.

That will also be my plan George. I just wanted to do a cold check FIRST before driving it anywhere and then do another HOT check as you described on return and also back up on my lift to make sure the new sump pan gasket has worked.

I have just finished several days work on my wiring loom. Cleaning, inspecting and assessing new connections needed for installation of new relays, electric fan and gearbox oil temperature. It is in remarkably good nick.

Fitted new over rider rubbers to the front bumper - the new ones are an improved design/ Looks better than black Duct tape and Araldite which had held the old ones on for a few years!

Fitted new over rider rubbers to the front bumper - the new ones are an improved design/ Looks better than black Duct tape and Araldite which had held the old ones on for a few years! I keep looking at mine and thinking, I need a fresh set. My o/s/f has a mess of adhesive around it as does the n/s/r but the other 2 are perished so might as well do the lot, but then the n/s rear over rider itself is in poor condition, but you put a new one on & it’ll look odd, like when someone’s had their teeth whitened. So what do you do? Ah yes put 2 on, then the bumper looks scruffy, then it all spirals out of control 😆

Just tidy is enough for us.
